So how did you finally persuade the guy to sell after all those years?

what a cool story. people think it's weird that we get so into these machines, but there's blood, sweat and memories in the metal and paint of these machines. thanks for sharing, and if you find pics or have more, please post them.

Smile Re: Do Miracles Still Happen????

In answer to some of the questions...

I have one picture of me and the bike that I posted here a couple of months ago...You can't see much of the bike, and it was before the repaint, and it is blk&wht. The bike started out as a 1957 T-110. The final paint is 1957 Plymouth Fury, Tan and Gold with black pinstriping. Ernest McDonald, was our shop painter, and he came up with the scheme. He was very talented. His choice of colors, and schemes never missed.

For some reason the Guy's in the shop always referred to the bike as "The Turkey Turd Tan Triumph". I have promised myself that all I'm gonna do for a year is document everything I can about the bike with lots of pictures, and put it back in running condition for the street, Taillight lens, battery, I have to find a generator, and get new rubber components, Grips, foot pegs, etc, etc.

As far as, "How did I get the guy to turn loose of it"?....He isn't much of a driver, more like a collector. He has a 1959 Caddy convertable he bought new, that is in a shed with either 8 or 12,000 miles on it (Can't remember which) That he hasn't driven since 1971. I asked him when he was gonna get it out and drive it..."I dunno", was his answer....I don't know where is is going with all his vehicles. I asked him what he was going to do with all of his treasure...He said when he died it was all going with him...Any how, the answer as to how I got him to sell it...Money......I probably paid more than anyone else would have, but it means more to me than anyone else....I guess you might say I bought a piece of time in my life that meant quite a bit to me. I bought sentiment, and it's hard to explain that to my wife.

I let Dwain Taylor know that I had found the bike, and after all this time his comment was, " You mean the Turkey Turd Tan Triumph" So there you go, the name has stuck all these years. Dwain figured like the rest of us that this is probably the only surviving member of the hundreds of custom bikes that came out of the T&M shop in the late 50's to late 60's, and that decal on the tank is the last of those also. I am having some decals made up for the reunion next year...All the mechanics that worked with me there at that time now wish they could find their old Triumph. I think you guy's know what I'm talking about. I may leave it just like it is, or give it a total cosmetic face lift, that will hopefully last another 40 - 50 years.

When you fire it up for the first time THATS when it will really be a time machine. A few years ago i bought a bike just to have that experience.

The T&M was the logo for T&M triumph the "T" was for Taylor(Dwain Taylor) and the "M" was his partner that was only with him for a year his name was Masteronie, or something like that.

I rode it around the block a couple of days ago ...It was kinda like taking your old high school girlfriend back to the Shady Rest Motel, 45 years later ...It didn't quite feel the same, Someone else had been riding her, but I knew it was the same ole' girl...
I had a difficult time trying to relate to my wife what it was all about, but it is just not something you can tell someone, unless you have been there...It's not something you can explain....You Guy's know where I'm coming from.
The first ride was kinda like turning back the clock...for a little while. The memories just keep coming back. Those days of drag racing with the T&M team and street racing, back in the early 60's was probably the best years of any young man's life.

Yeah.....but she was only ridden 500 miles, in 45 years.

Hell.....my old highschool girlfriend probably has had 2-3 rebuilds and a VIN swap by now......

Great story. You can't make that shit up......
