Vale EJ.
Never saw him in person but I still remember the breathless British motorcycle newspaper report of his exploits. They were blown away that he just put the rear wheel on a stand, wound her up to peak revs and rocked her off the stand for a quarter mile wheelspin. Nothing remotely like it had been seen in old Blighty. Awesome stuff!
As I see old heros of mine pass none have been harder to accept than EJ. He was the craziest guy I have ever known....and one of the smartest. He had to be to do all the insane things he did for 40 plus years and live to 71 years of age. If you would like to read about my encounters with "The Michigan Madman" first in 1963 and last when he came out of retirement with "Widow Maker" in 1999 go to pages 24 and 26 of the Vintage Fuel Drag Bike thread here. You will understand why he was such a magical figure. My condolences to his family and friends.
As an owner and rider of one of the most idiotic contraptions ever conceived, A Boss Hoss, EJ has always been a hero of mine. Like Burt Munro, he'll never be equaled as far as backyard ingenuity and sheer balls are concerned
My dad lived around the corner and was friends with him growing up. He even use to tow the widowmaker to the line for him. Meet him mulitple times, and was always a super nice guy.
"Today, there are no more EJ Potters because the world has snuffed ‘em out with red tape, lawsuits, bicycle helmets, knee pads, helicopter parents, anti-lock brakes, traction control, electronic stability control, and general enslavement to insurance companies."

Sad news about EJ's passing, but what a guy, who else would have the balls to ride a jet powered trike!!! What a rare breed, he made trips to the drag strip fun back in the day. Id like to see John Force try that one!! R.I.P. EJ
