I dig the shit out of that tank. Like I said I'm normally a solid color guy but I like it a lot. Are you thinking of selling it and starting over seems like a waste to redo that work. I'm building a bike for my son and have a solid black sporty tank on it and I think that would work on his bike.

Not a rich guy but I would be interested if you decide to sell.

Thanks mate. Honestly, it's not just the design of the paint job that's putting me off, little flaws in the scheme really bug the crap out of me. If it weren't my bike, or if it was a customers bike and they were OK with it, I would be less critical but, it doesn't work for someting I spent so much time/effort into making for myself.

Thanks for the ideas. I've been looking at dark colors that I can maybe two tone with black that wouldn't be too flashy. Part of me still wants to make it a solid color tho. I've found a few that really grab me, now to find one that grabs me and goes with the build.

Thanks for the offer Cajun, but this tank has been modified to fit this frame. It will be easier, and cheaper, just to sand it down and start over.

I appreciate the input, at least I know I'm not losing my mind all by myself!
I feel I really let myself down on this one. I've had this bike in my head for a decade+ and it took a bad turn on the last thing to be done. Pretty stupid. All I had to do is pick a color. I had at least a dozen that I think would have been great to choose from, any of which would have worked and been cheaper to boot.

In all honesty, as much as I've joked about it before, I think a nice, deep single stage black would look stunning on it.

Default In a nutshell.

OK, So here's the gorilla in my room. Took me a while to bow, but bow I have.
This bike is the Bottom Feeder. It started life as, and it was built as the Bottom Feeder. Nearly every part on it has suffered a file, saw, drill, hammer or other offending tool in my oafish hands before being allowed residence upon it's carcass. Some were modified a little, some a lot, and some completely made by an obsessed loon sitting on his basement floor, holding the part with his feet. I built this in my basement with very basic tools and it's given me a connection with every part. There are a few things that were made by others, very talented (and patient) individuals who could do the things that I could not, but even those things had a large dose of my input, and those individuals were chosen because they could make the exact part I needed, and they are very good at what they do.
This tank is no different. I got it on the cheap, second hand, and it was as ugly as most of the parts used. It had a pretty large dent in it and was not what one would call "nicely turned out". Most would have tossed it in the trash. I cut off the mounts, drilled holes in the bottom and put in bungs and added a bracket. I also sat on the floor for hours massaging the dent to the point it needed very little fill.
It's not so much that I don't like how the paint turned out or it's flaws, though those things make it easier for me to erase it, it's that, after all of the work I put into the tank, I let someone else hide my work under theirs. It really doesn't matter what color I paint it, or if I just paint it flat gray and let my kids draw on it with sharpies, it will be just as much a part of this bike as the little hand polished screws in places no one will ever see.
I love this bike, and all of her flaws.... maybe a bit too much.

Thanks to all who've been kind enough to add their thoughts, especially those, as equally odd as I, who haven't been shy in pointing out the times I have strayed away from the spirit of this little motorcycle.

Aye, but sanding metal is way more fun than sanding off new paint.

Purple frame....

I picked up a couple cans of mega-custom flat paint at the hardware store today so it won't be nekkid while I choose a color. Picked up a couple sharpies too.

Hell who knows, it might never have "proper" paint on it again.

Default Oh my....

After sanding for a while, I discovered that it's easier to just peel it off.

Do it yourself CUSTOM PAINT for Harley Sportster type tank. No painting experience necessary. Just bring patience and a big can of glue.

I'm not really sure what the deal is. Maybe it wasn't fully cured (?). It peeled off down to the silver base and the base washed off with a bit of acetone. I wish I had noticed the paint would peel before I started sanding on it, the thicker areas peeled off easier, coming off in bigger pieces. Luckily, I hadn't gotten too far towards the front of the tank because the part that would have been a pain in the ass around the front of the tunnel came off very easily in only a few big chunks.
Sprayed it down with a coat of rattle can primer and sanded it smooth last night. Going to shoot it with another coat today to see if there are any areas that need to be smoothed out.
I think I found a new hobby.... there's something very satisfying... relaxing to wet sanding this tank smooth.
