Removing broken patent plate studs from Triumph Timing covers

There are many ways to get by putting a fresh patent plate on, when the original rivet/nail things break off flush with the timing cover; drilling new holes slightly to one side or the other, among others. But, if you have the time, and a TIG welder, there is another way.

Using .045" filler wire, puddle the exposed bit of the rivet, then put your filler wire to it. Two of the three fasteners came out on the first try on this cover, The third took three tries. the lump of filler is what you grab and pull. I hope this helps the rest of you Triumph guys out there.

Excellent idea, looks pretty painless. I am not a fan of drilling into these covers. I did one a few moons ago and can't say I was too pleased. So, made up my mind to pretty much just leave them in place if they were broken off. Thanks for the easy and simple tip !
