Hey there,
I couldn't pass up this '37 Harley UL project that was on CL about 6 months ago. The motor was blown so i got it at a good deal along with the rest of the bike. But i soon stripped the bike and sold all but the motor and knuckle/flathead frame basically.
Found some cylinders and dropped the motor off at my favorite old time engine builder in Long Beach.
Then came the task of finding everything else, which turned out to be a quest for the hard to find and more often than not, Expensive '37-only bits! I have not had a harley this old before and never thought i would be this enthralled with stock parts, but these early big twins have a certain charm once you dive in.
Anyway, motor is almost done, building the trans next week. Just fixed up this old springer i got that looks like an old Buchanans job and is 2 3/8" over like an XA. Had to replace the front legs and staighten the left rear leg. I am not much for stock frontends anyway and love my shovel with the 6" over wideglide.
Need to weld some stuff back onto the frame for the tanks and brakes. I got a set of '37/eary '38 only Big twin flathead tanks, a '37 only oil tank, some '36-39 stepped star hubs, a VL 19" front rim and 18" kelsey hayes rear, and just have an old rigid panhead fender for the back right now.

Anyway, i hope these pics work, i usually just put progress on the FMA blog...cuz its a pain to do the photobucket thing...

Hope to have it at Born-Free

Hi all!

I've searched for info on this particular girder, and have come up with less than a Sasquatch Scientist hunting for evidence of their existence.

This is what I have:

As you can see, they're pretty unique looking. I have most of the parts, but half of them are rusted so bad, I'll have to replace them of fabricate them. I have the spring, but I dont have the shock. Gotta figure out what I can put in there.

I'm also not sure as to their assembly.

I've PM'd a couple members here, that had some photos, and they are looking to dig up some info, if they still have it. I've also emailed a Girder specialist in England, to see if he knows anything.

This post, I'm just hoping that someone reading it might know something about these forks, and can help me out with a lil info.

Thanks!
Stephen

This is an early Vespa.
Its really solid, except for the bottom part.

I started by cutting off the sides of the floorboards.

<a href="http://www.jockeyjournal.com/forum/attachment.php?attachmentid=76420" target="_blank" title="Name:
Views:
Then I cut away the center part.

And I carefully peeled away one layer of steel, while leaving the other intact.

I do this by cutting away one side of the spotwelds.

For me, this is the quickest way of doing things, giving the least cleanup later and the most controll.

So I want to commemorate my 68 bonnie chop, which I got going good and looking sort of how I wanted it with a post.

after I decent ride around the block a friend showed up and needed to use a tool, so I parked the bike and shut it off. Short ride on amals and possibly a sticky float and you may get a little fuel spill, well it backfired as I was taking my helmet off and started a little fire on the right carb. No big deal right? well as I was grabbing something to pat it out my pal was like "dude!" I look and the bike is fucking burning all over, I figured it melted the fuel line and I was right. 2 extinguisers and a hose later and we thought we got it out.. until we saw everyone outside pointing and hearing sirens. we ran out and saw the roof of my garage on fire. frantic scrambling to get all the other bikes and parts out ended with me wearing my dogs outside bed blanket over my shoulders and an old helmet and bubble shield trying to wrench my joe hunt mag off as the firemen dragged my ass out.

The good, most of the triumph can be rebuilt and I think I'm going to do that... the bad I lost a bunch of tools, my whole roof, and various other garage things.

The message. Beware the carbs, beware the fuel lines, and keep extinguisers and extra insurance handy

I'll be selling some parts this week to help fund the rebuild, keep an eye on the classifieds... Also the frame is solid I already stripped it and the springer and front wheel survived.

Investigation shows it's an amen frame that looks like originally for a CB750 made well and modded to fit a triumph unit. I would be willing to trade the frame, vintage skinny springer and wheels for a rigid bonnie roller with a standard rake and a little stretch since I really don't fit well on this thing with mids
