Killed the gremlin!!! And not a moment to soon, I was ready to blow my brains all over my garage wall with this frigg’n bike!!! After meticulously rebuilding my 68 650, and it firing and running on the second kick (the first I had the plug wires reversed). I wanted to make sure this thing ran reliably so I then added a electronic (Sparx) ignition and new (JRC) carbs. (the Amals wouldn’t balance and I holed a piston)
I installed the ignition, it fired and ran. As I used the timing light to set full advance, I watched the timing mark smoothly move then a single strobe locating the mark way off. Since it did not effect the way the bike ran, I chalked it up to possibly having the “trigger” wires routed near the rectifier.
The bike would fire first kick (honestly), idle, and accelerate without problems. After the break in period, I hit the highway. The bike would not break 65mph, readjusted the valves, checked the timing…still had no balls past 60. I took the bike on a Ride for Autism in Jacksonville (100 miles+) no problems other than no top speed.
Before the rebuild, the bike would still pull past 70+, and during the rebuild I installed a larger trans sprocket to lower the RPMs at high speeds. I could only attributed the loss of power to possible improper jetting on the new carbs. Everything checked out fine, jet size, and “color” of the plugs. Just to make sure I swapped the Amels back, ran OK for a short time then it began spitting and sputtering. Discovered my “new” battery only had 7+ volts and would not take a charge.
New battery, relocated my ignition brain and trigger wires (noticed pillar and trigger bolts were loose on timing disc). From this point I could not get the bike to run… I would spend the next 2 months chasing this gremlin…Trouble shot the ENTIRE wiring, to the point of soldering EVERY connection and replacing ALL wires from the ignition box to its terminated end (eliminating any possible bad wire). I would get spark, but it was intermittent and not consistent (multiple “sparks” in less than half a rotation of the trigger). I re installed the points, (discovering I had 1 bad condenser—another story..) The bike fired and ran. Not to mention it was constantly over 100+ degrees, so work was done in short intervals.
Spoke with some Sparx dealers, they informed me the failure rate of these were low and usually due to the “trigger disc”. I informed my parts supplier of the WHOLE story, I even used his troubleshooting guides, not luck.. I returned the ignition, (still under warranty) and they shipped a new one without question. Though he did say he did appreciate my honesty about my installing/removing it over and over.
Ok, new ignition in hand, during “trigger disc” installation into the housing I noticed it did not “install” all the way into the housing. It hung up on the inner lip, not allowing the disc to fully seat. The disc was slightly out of round and needed a slight bit of material removed from a small area. Static BTDC set, kicked, and it kicked back. Retarded the timing a bit, fired, spit, sputtered, died. Double, triple checked the timing…still kicked and did not run….At his point I am ready to eat lead!!!! I pulled the plugs, kicked it over and noticed the same problem I had before….multiple “sparks” less than half of a rotation of the “trigger”. I figured there was NO WAY I got 2 bad systems….the only constant on the bike was the coil. Nope wasn’t it… I would slowly rotate the motor by hand watching the location of the magnet/trigger behind the trigger plate as it rotated and the “spark”. I noticed as it was passing just under the trigger wire terminal screws I got spark. I then removed the trigger disc plate and inspected everything and discovered small filings stuck to the magnets. Closer inspection revealed the screw heads on the magnets were contacting the trigger terminal wire screw heads.
With this new discovery I proceeded to clean the magnets and make plastic washers to space the trigger plate off the surface the timing housing….installed, timing checked……
Frigg’n thing fired on first and idled, with instant throttle response. I then took photos, and began to write this in case some other poor guy is in his garage chewing on the barrel of a gun after installing one of these systems…..I’m not sure If I am the only person that had this type problem, but I do know when I bought this bike it was a basket case..pieced together. Somehow someway either the “trigger”magnet or exhaust cam protruded further into the timing housing or my timing housing (with recessed lip where the timing disc rested) was incorrect…One thing I do know is that this gremlin is DEAD!!!
this week I will get things dialed in and let you know if this was effecting my top end speed....or if it was the carb jetting...

Hey guys- Time to part with some of the tanks I've got laying around. They're all in great shape and several are NOS and have never been mounted or had gas in them. These are all hard to find tanks, especially in this condition. I figure there are some folks out there that could actually use them rather than having them sitting on my shelves so they're priced to sell. All prices include shipping in the lower 48 so I'll cover the shipping. Paypal is great. Please feel free to PM me with any questions you might have. THANKS!

First up is an absolutely perfect NOS Wassell banana tank still in the original box. Even the factory primer is in great shape. Super clean and still has the mounting tabs in the box. Doesn't get any nicer than this for a Wassell banana! $175 shipped in the lower 48.

Next up is another NOS Wassell. This is a NOS Wassell peanut tank that is ready to run. Still has the original tabs stamped "Made in England" that have never been welded on. This tank has never had gas in it or been mounted on a bike. $175 shipped in the lower 48.

This is an NOS GME frisco mount sporty tank. Both tabs are stamped "GME". Very clean, never been mounted or had gas in it. Only thing I can see on it is a couple of grind marks on the front mount, but no biggie at all. Very hard to find, nice and heavy duty small sporty tank. $150 shipped in the lower 48.

This thing is awesome, it's aluminum! Very cool old Husky tank! It's in very impressive shape still with the original maroon paint. Looks great with the original paint or you could strip it and polish it to perfection, its NICE! Has kind of a Detriot Brothers look to it and would look tough on any bike. You'll never have to worry about rust with alloy! $150 shipped in the lower 48.

I had picked this up to use on a skinny chop project and it's one of my favorite chop tanks ever! It originated from a "Fantic" mini bike from back in the day and still has the original factory scroll work and "fanticmotor" script on both sides! Very similar in shape to the Wassell peanut tanks, but it's probably about .3 gallons smaller. Very unique and very cool, you won't find another one. $135 shipped in the lower 48.

Another NOS high mount frisco sporty tank. This one has also never been mounted or had gas in it. Someone sprayed it maroon/red MANY years ago, which would probably explain why its so clean with zero rust. Super nice tank and slightly smaller than any other sporty tank I've ever had. $125 shipped in the lower 48.
