I picked up a 1970 Triumph Daytona this summer and am finally getting around to working on it. It is a total basket case and been exposed to the elements. We are trying to get the gearbox casing off but it gives about a 1/4 inch and then stops. and want go any farther. I am a novice and not sure what it is getting stuck on. The shifter lever if frozen solid and will not budge. Could it be stuck in gear? Any ideas of what it's binding up on? I am at a bit if a standstill. Thanks!

Did you take the shift lever and kicker lever off?

There is a shaft on the gear indicaor Unit.

You will have to take the split pin out then pull the shaft up.

Fiddly little sucker,

I did remove the kick start but in the Haynes book it said to leave the shifter on and to use it as a handle.

In the Haynes book it said nothing about that pin sounds promising I will give it a shot tomorrow. Thanks a million I am sure I will have a tono of more questions in the future.

sick, To remove the cover, the kicker needs removal. If you can turn the kick shaft and watch the shaft turn in that brass insert, it (kicker case) should slide out.
Push and hold the kicker shaft against the engine. Then, rock the case away from the shaft.
Now, if you want to use the kick arm to turn the engine, insert the kick pin and turn the engine without the case in place.
