Don't know if this has been covered or not before..

My request is that we start keeping "for sale" postings intact. In other words once an item is sold the price does not turn into "SOLD!!", the post deleted, or the item removed from listing...

This way the market value posts on the main board could be mitigated a bit by the search function of the for sale board.. Plus it gives somebody a good idea what to ask for a part they might not otherwise know what to ask for

It's pretty much determined by the seller. If they simply edit-in "sold", it will stand. Many seem to choose to replace the price with "sold" on edit.

But if they bump the thread to announce "sold" we delete the whole thing, in fairness to others whose posts were displaced by the bump.

I seriously doubt it has any effect on the "what's it worth" threads. Those, like so many other repeated common-topic questions seem to be posted by newer members who didnt or wont search, and dont read Stickies....just a way of life here.

Again, the best way to establish "market value" of a specific part or bike is to narrow a search on ebay, then search the 'completed' listings.

I know that I for one, tend to throw random parts up for sale in the classifieds every once in a while. When I do there's usually quite a few parts, and I always post anywhere from one to four pictures of each part. Makes it easier for the guys looking for parts if they don't have to wade through 20 parts that have already been sold to find the one part left that hasn't sold yet. I'm one of the guys that deletes the stuff once sold. Besides, the "what's it worth" posts are just people being lazy. If someone was able to find the JJ, log in, post a "whats it worth" thread, and finally post a follow up thread asking what happened to their original ad because it was moved, then they're internet savvy enough to be able to do 5 minutes worth of web research and dig for a little info on their own. There's a lot more internet out there outside the JJ.

Deleting the price or the item entirerly helps to let people know the item is sold.
I still get asked for items that I do not have for sale or are marked sold at the begining of the thread because they are still in the title of the FS thread. Usually from new members. I think if the prices were left we would constantly be asked about items that are sold.

It would be nice if we could change the thread title to list new things ourselves instead of starting new threads, but the mods combined mine which worked fine for me.

I agree with Dragon that the buyer should be educated on what they are buying, there is plenty of info and places to look, and take the time to educate themselves.

FYI, I love the FS board and buy as much as I sell there!

I leave the prices and pictures of most of my sold items and add "SOLD" for just that reason- it helps others determine what something actually sold for and when and I leave the pics up with the idea that it may help someone with a technical or identification question, and they will be available long after the ebay completed listings expire. But I do agree that it should be at the discression of the seller.
