: 98 Softail torque question????

Al right I have a 98 Fatboy and I'm replacing the paper gaskets that are in between the rockers and the head. Does anybody know the torque specs for the 2 allens, rocker bolts, and the three smaller bolts. Also the Torque specs on the allens that fasten the cover on the top cover would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Its not much, but get a manual or sneak a peak at the MC parts store. Not trying to evade the question, but what if somebody gives you the wrong spec. and you F it up? Good luck.

The 2 allen head bolts (which are 1/4 inch fasteners) and the 3 hex head bolts (also 1/4 inch fasteners) Have a torque spec of 10-12 foot/pounds. The 4 rocker bolts (5/16 fasteners) have a torque spec of 16-18 foot/pounds. Make sure your cylinder is at TDCC (top dead center of compression) for each cylinder as you torque them down. (if you have the rear of the bike in the air, put in 5th gear, rotate tire forwards until your front cyl. intake pushrod opens and closes, the next TDC is TDCC.) Harley has a sequence in the manual for this, however, what i like to do is to slowly tighten each fastener 1/2 turn at a time. Work your way from the inside to the outside a few times. Also the top rocker box fasteners (since they are also 1/4 inch fasteners) take the 10-12 foot/pound spec. However, if your rocker box covers want to "walk" on you when you are aligning them(tightening) a little tighter is ok.

according to my Haynes...almost the same as river posted. (just for verification)

The 1/4 inch is about 11 foot pounds.

River's got it. I usually roll the motor till the pushrods are lowest, (valves closed).
FYI Harley factory service manual says for Evolution engine rocker boxes:
The four 5/16" bolts (rocker shafts) tighten in small increments in a cross pattern to bleed the lifters. Torque to 15-19 ft lbs (20-26Nm)
Then the two 1/4" allen heads in the corners get torqued to 90-120 inch pounds (7.5-10 ft lbs or 10-13Nm)
The three 1/4" hex head bolts get torqued to 10-14 ft lbs (14-19nm)
Torque the four 1/4" allen cover screws to 10-14 ft lbs (14-19 nm) in a crisscross pattern.
I prefer the steel one piece rocker box to head gaskets over the paper ones.
