Ok, I searched but couldnt find a post I made a long time ago about the JJ and posting here and things that go bump in the night. Maybe it got deleted, maybe I just couldnt find it.. This is going to be long, read it or dont..

At any rate..

I have heard people equate an internet board to a local bar, or to your garage/hangout/whatever. Do you pat every dude in said hangout on the back, hug him when he stubbed his toe, comfort him when his old lady got caught fucking the mailman? Do you love every single bike in the parking lot? Do you drink the same thing everyone else in the bar is drinking? ??? NO.. you dont. So, why does everyone have such a fucking vagina around here these days?

I was raised to respect others, but to speak my mind. I have spoken my mind and had to back it up "old school" on many occasions, but win or lose.. I SAID WHAT THE FUCK WAS ON MY MIND. When I post a pic I am ready to handle whatever comes with the post.. I dont give a good god damn. I ride bikes, same thing I have been doing since I was 4 years old. I build them for a living and its been my bread and butter since I walked off my day job back in Montana, cashed in my 401k, and moved to New Mexico. Believe me, someone not liking one of my bikes isnt going to stop my world. Why should it poop on yours?

So what if I dont like your bike? If you post your pictures, be ready to get good AND/OR bad. If you cant handle it, get the fuck out. In my opinion, the problem (if there is one) is that people are soft and afraid to say.. "fuck it, that shit is gay". This board can self moderate (I think one problem here is too much moderation).. How many views/posts did the "what bike should I get" chick post get? Way to fucking many if you ask me. The question was answered (as are many "question" posts) in the first few replies.. but people seem to just want to keep piling on and piling on.. beating the living shit out of the post.. Its one thing to add some info, but redundancy is a motherfucker. THINK before you post.

There are some AWESOME bikes here, shop built AND backyard built.. Jap, Brit, American... all kinds.. But, like all things, that sword is two edged.. There are also a shitload of bikes that make me want to crack someones skull. I have met some GREAT people here and I am sure I will meet more as time goes on. Yeah, I speak my mind... I expect the same out of each and everyone of you.. Be careful though, keyboard commando tactics may land you in the ER at some point.

What does all this mean? Be yourself. Be real. Build what you want. Ask questions, but for fucks sake.. use some common sense! Most importantly. RIDE YOUR MOTORCYCLE because you want to, not because its the cool thing to do this week.

I am of the mind that this board would greatly benefit from seperate forums. Jap, Brit, American, and other. LOSE THE JOCK SHOPS SECTION, and let the fists fly.

The best bars are the ones you are a little scared to go into.

ps.. This IS one of those posts that requires ALOT of input. Speak up you fuckers.

I gotta agree with most your points.

The list continues to grow of those who have came and went and alot of good have left or just lurk now because of said reasons.

The self moderation is kinda like doge ball when you were a kid if somebody was a dick and they were in the middle rest assured the problem would usually handle itself.

PS: Trent does this post make my butt look big when I am on my bike? :D

It was hard to swallow at first, but you are right- if someone doesn't like your bike, they should be able to say so. Ultimately, it is YOUR bike, if you're building or riding it, so unless you want it to look like everyone else's, do what YOU want and don't fuggin worry about it.

A+

Especially the "too much moderation" part.
here's my gripe on here.
Someone posts something FS: and you email them and PM them a few times with no reply? I mean, if I was selling something I guess I'd like someone to buy it. Isn't that the point for a FS: post??? Then the OBO and you send messages to pay the price they post with no answer???

Then the do not bump with "sold" from what I know of message boards This is how moderators know it's sold so they can delete the post then people don't bother sending pm's about it.

And just listen to the hue and cry when we close threads specifically because of the dead-horse-beaten effect.

I am of the mind that this board would greatly benefit from seperate forums. Jap, Brit, American, and other. LOSE THE JOCK SHOPS SECTION, and let the fists fly.

Spend some time (and pay attention) on the Question/suggestions board (which is where this thread belongs) and notice how many times these points are addressed and discussed. With the reported results having come after direct appeals to Ryan the forum Owner.

If you are so unhappy with specific points and/or policies, please take it up with him.

I have to agree with most of what you have said. But , there needs to be a section for general chatter like this for example. Being a foreigner I don't think I've ever used the Jock Shop section but I can see the reason why it should be kept too . By adding Brit, American & Jap bike sections it better serves the interests of the members better. Just my thoughts.

On a more serious note I want to say that I think the idea of separate forums is a bad move. The way it is I end up looking a a lot of bikes that I'd probably never see if they were in a separate forum.

I think that there is sometimes a little too much moderation also. Some things need to be monitored but the threads and posts that are just lame are usually self correcting. But hey, that's not my call.

I'm all for people speaking their mind. I do it myself from time to time. Again, if reading things like that aren't your thing, don't read them.

Oh and the "The best bars are the ones you are a little scared to go into." line is dead on. After getting here and seeing the level of the members of this board I kept thinking (and still do) what the hell am I doing here, these guys are way above my level. But Dragon hasn't banned me yet so I'll keep posting.

There's a great bunch of very knowledgeable people here that are happy to help just about anyone. Most of the time you don't see much criticism or it's kinda softballed because I think most think, if the guy that built it/owns it likes it, hey, it's his. But everyone steps up if something looks unsafe or if they see a hint or two a new guy might get something out of. The whole motorcycle (I hate to use this term) lifestyle is more individualism and respect for the other guys right to be weird (in your opinion). The majority of what I see on this board are actually into bikes and not the weekend HOG, go to the draler and buy more billet type.

Ok, I've said too much already. Just my opinion anyway.

I've only been here a year so I'm still some what of a newbie. Don't know what the board was like before June 2007. Here is my take... I skip pretty much all the "Does this look cool?" threads. WTF? Do you like it? Then do it! Who cares if anyone else thinks it's cool or not. There is also a tendancy on the part of many to read the original post without reading any of the responses. This is how we end up with 20 identical responses to the same simple question. Stop being lazy and read all the posts to see if you really have anything of value to add.

There are too many "fluffy" threads and not much real "tech" stuff. I prefer the technical exchange. I don't know squat about anything except pans, shovels, and evos. But I enjoy reading the technical discussion on anything. Enjoy the photo threads too.

If your only thought about a beautifully executed motorcycle is 'I like the green kicker pedal', keep the thought in your head and not on the board.

Search like a motherf*cker twice before posting 'question' threads, especially about routine stuff that has been discussed ad nauseum.

Find another website if all you do is 'wish', 'plan', or 'hope' to build a bike like 'these old school choppers'. This place is for doers, not dreamers.

As if on cue.. Moderation steps in.

People that SHOULD read this post will now never see it because it has been moderated into the shadows.

Being a patriot is tough and is often not rewarding..

There is a HUGE difference in being a patriot and being a whiner.

There is a "permanent rediect" left on the board so anyone following or searching for this thread will end up right here.

And it is not locked, so bask in the glory of your com'patriots'.

And that first one is a lame statement too, I just looked at the thread I started about guys who first-post and only-post in Classifieds...........it was moved here FROM Classifieds after only about 4 hours, and yet it has 153 replies and over 8000 views.

So much for the "secret never-to-be-seen-again" board.

I read TWO sections of this website. The main board and the classifieds.

Then you are both narrow-minded, and beating a self-serving drum with your endless criticism of the (free advertising exposure) Jock Shops forum for our vendor-members.....and I can produce the PMs to show, you are very much in the minority on this opinion.

This Questions board is for input on the whole place.

And Again, anyone with issues about the content or direction of this board is and has long been encouraged to contact Ryan directly.

I don't like how the mods are quick to lock stuff that might cause a ruckus, but will let threads of leg humpin' bullshit go on forever.

I hate newbies that dredge up shit from months or years ago, and then hit us with their wisdom, "your bikes killer, man".

I fucking detest mother fuckers that fucking turn up and fucking post 10 fucking times a day with complete fucking bullshit like "that's cool", "great bike" "can I fuck your sister" (actually a sister comment might be cool cos it'd cause a stir). This section is "below the fold" and not in the two popular forums, so it gets seen less, no question about it.

Thanks Trent for trying once again. That's twice this year, and both times you surprise me with how well you articulate the problem.

The bar analogy is perfect. You know what happens when the good local spot gets too popular? Most of the original people responsible for creating the vibe split and try to find or create something else. Trent's diatribe is like getting up on the bar, shooting his .45 into the rafters and saying "Hey fuckers, quit gaying up my hangout!" But then management hangs a rainbow flag up the next day and well...

I think Trent's last semi-annual flame out on the subject might have helped spawn the heavy-handed moderation that's going on these days. I know it wasn't anyone's intent to make it worse, quite the opposite I'm sure. The result? Mixed at best. Some lame threads get locked quick, some not. You can only count on the bouncers so much. If it's your bar and you see someone getting ready to carve their name in the bathroom stall, help them realize that Applebee's is more their style. They'll leave feet first or figure it out.

Likewise at the local bar, I personally would never walk up to the dude with the Vulcan and tell him it's gay and he should leave. If he asked my opinion, I'd give it to him straight but judging things based on fashion is always subjective and my opinion is no more important than anyone else's. (Plus you never know if the dude has an old UL under a tarp in the barn...) Here if I see a post about a bike I could give a shit about and I go past it just like I would in the lot. If someone points out a memorable feature, cool, but otherwise it's just one more forgettable bike in a sea of others. The fake tough guy, wallet-flexing show offs will find somewhere else to gather where they get more attention. That is the vibe I come here to get away from, so let's not circle the wagons and kick out the first timer with the wannabe cafe using conduit for bars, that's what they are getting away from too. Let's lead by example, even if that example is sometimes harsh.

Since the blog on the front page and the other posts at the top of the board don't seem to present the same vibe as a bunch of classy bikes in front of a shady bar, I think this board needs a mission statement. Part of the charm of this place is that a newb (me included) can soak up a wealth of info, tech, style, etc by listening more and talking less. I don't think any of us have anything against jap bikes or home built death traps, but when a guy pulls up and every other thread is about shit like that we end up with frustrated posts like Guy's from earlier in the week. With this in mind, a simple sticky posted at the top of the board outlining what is expected from all users is a simple solution. One was proposed by HalWade last August, which was supported by most and then, sadly, buried to the suggestion box... That thread (http://www.jockeyjournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=23499).

I understand it might be easier to keep V8 Vegas and killer v-dubs out of the HAMB, and bikes are a little harder to pigeon hole, but bikes and this board are important to me and a lot of others on here, so it sucks when we offer up solid solutions and they just fade away like Trent's, Guy's and McGoo's. Defining guidelines and objectives works whether you are raising kids, running a company or trying to manage a couple thousand freaks that love custom motorcycles.

Without proper management from above, Trent is just a whiner and more people with valuable content to share will join the ranks of those who said "Fuck it, it ain't worth it anymore, that place is gay" and fade off the JJ radar...

To sum up: A simple mission statement sticky at the top of the main board that defines what is and isn't relevant on this board would help new and old members stay focused. <exit soapbox now...>

Again, Trent, thanks for trying however futile.

I read here every night. I have learned more here about my bike then any place, person, etc on the planet.

I love the fact that for the MOST part, this forum stays on track, many many forums go to shit in quick time and are solid fluff, flamers, chest pounders, people repost bad info, blablabla.

This place may not be perfect in peoples books for different reasons, but its got way more good, then bad, which is extremely hard to do & maintain on a board.

Brent, you, & a handful of other are people who when I see post, I read, because I know theres usually something there to read. Keep posting what you do.

Spliting forum into makes (harley, Triumph, Jap....)

I think if a tech sectiion was added ,this would be exellent.

I think for general discussion, its a bad idea. If general forum was split, I wouldnt have read 2/3's of the post I have by others & would never have gotten to know them, or their styles of build, or trick shit they do that I could apply to my bike.

Heavy moderation does suck. Forums that are not moderated enough go to shit rapidly & suck. Thats always gonna be a mixed bag.

Jock shops, I totally dig being able to go rite for the Paint guys pages, & Xaviers (sp?) seat page. If people dont want to go there they wont. It also keeps vendors from posting 1000 post a weeks with what they made, or painted, or are selling in the main forum, it keeps that in a place where people can go, or not go.

I like reading people posts more that are strait up how they feel, or injecting their opinion, I hate 20 replies with agreement (unless its a wicked awesomebadassperfect build......)

Chics, theres like 4 of them on a board with 6000 members, theyre gonna get oguled, dont read it if it pisses you off. Yes its funny they can 10 pages of reply in a day off their first post, guys have weiners.

I babble in the wee hours.............

Oh......... +1 , almost forgot........

My recent post here;
http://www.jockeyjournal.com/forum/showthread.php?p=356016#post356016
pretty much sums up my feelings on this matter (if you can be arsed to read it, I know I probably wouldn't), but some interesting points are being thrown up here.

I know the sub-forum issue has been discussed at length and been categorically rejected. I'm personally all for it, though will admit it's hard to envisage exactly how it would pan out.
Maybe it could be tried out for a finite period (stated in advance) of say three months. What the hell, see what happens. (I know, it probably involves loads of work)

I like Billdozer2's idea of the simple mission statement, but I'd go further than a sticky and make it part of the banner design.
For people like me arriving for the first time, it was obvious what this place was about, but for some of these kids who've turned up recently they just think "Hey, cool motorcycles".
They see a rusty VL-framed bike with a Knuck engine and the front fender missing, and a CB360 with weld in struts and z-bars as basically the same thing. The distinction is too subtle for them to grasp - therefore any mission statement needs to be pretty blunt.

As for the moderators, I think they have generally done a pretty good job. It's not a task I'd envy, there are some difficult balances to maintain, but they must be concerned about they way things are heading.
In fact Dragon seems to have a new signature lately, ("fuck this shit, I've had enough") so maybe there is hope that someone with influence can help change things...

The Jockey Journal name, vs The Jalopy Journal...seems to suggest the site is about riders not their vehicle. Maybe throws some folks off that as long as they ride, all is good times here. Time to open up The Japper Journal? Any site direction is fine, but sticky one so we know what it is, cause all these threads and the recent polls and newbies asking if its ok for them to be here or are they not wanted(oh my god) and the talking about talking are the part of this site that gets me down.

"take it to backtalk" used to be a popular saying here.

What does all this mean? Be yourself. Be real. Build what you want. Ask questions, but for fucks sake.. use some common sense! Most importantly. RIDE YOUR MOTORCYCLE because you want to, not because its the cool thing to do this week.

Exactly; how many times does one have to hear advice/opinions before they act on them. "What color bandana are you guys wearing to the 2009 EDR?" who gives a shit? Trent sets the tone with the comments I quoted above. It doesn't take all of us to jump on the wagon and agree, to make these comments any more relevant. He made these points well! Thanks Trent!

It doesn't matter if you ride a Brit, Jap, HD,Vincent, Ariel, who cares...............as long as it is a MOTORCYCLE and fits the bill. Fits the bill? you might ask. Yeah if your riding moto-x and you want to discuss your latest tweaks so you can pull off a triple lindy; find a moto-x board that is filled with likewise knowledge and interests. If you ride a scooter.................no matter how hard you try, it is not a MOTORCYCLE; find a scoot forum. Probably one of the easiest ways to get rid of the fodder around here is to do as Bill said and ignore them...................move on to the next post. When someone jumps in the mix and says, "nice scooter, I had one as a kid", or they say "wow killer paint", even though deep down they know it truly looks like an abortion: these comments only give the impression that you want them to hang around and continue there endless search for existence on this board.
I am a pinstriper, and belong to a pinstriper's board. Nothing pisses me off more than when someone comes along and posts 30 pics of their latest airbrush work! WTF? It's called pinheadlounge; not airheadlounge, so move on!
As Trent said, "Be yourself"......I had a guy recently commission me to do some striping/artwork on his new harley. I asked what he wanted and he kept asking back, what I thought would look cool. Finally I broke him down and said, "Dude this is YOUR bike! I dont care if you want a big pink dildo on the tank, just make a decision. If it were my choice I would have nevr paid $23K for a fuckin motorcycle; but that's me! I suggest you think about it for a year or 2 and when you finally figure it out, see if you can find some stickers with what you want on them, cause you will probably change your mind pretty soon after." and then I walked away from a good chunk of money, because of his indecision. One of the biggest plagues of this board as I see it is exactly that....................indecision!
The guys from DICE ought to jump in about now and say: Ïf you fuckers would just listen.................................."Fuck this let's ride!"

If I may chime in....Its a shame that most of the issues Trent addressed (well articulated ones), and the suggestions BillDozer has made will never be acknowledged by those who need to see them. Theres a guy on here that has a comment on every thread, so out of curiosity I checked his profile...Never made an intro, 121 posts and not one is anything more then a "that looks sick" post, and worse...HAS NO BIKE! Ive been tempted to call this dude out several times but always held back feeling its not my place. I have NO problem speaking up, and if I have to back it up "Old School" as Trent so eloquently put it, Then bring it on. But thats not what Im here for, I came to be humbled by the fact of how little I know and how much I can learn. Trent, Bill, McGoo I applaud your efforts, its just a shame unless we burn some people at the stake your words may fall on deaf ears.
Let the flaming begin boys.

Yeah, it's weird...
The internet is the best thing, and also the most annoying thing.
Am I sick of how no good thread stays on the top page long enough to enjoy because it gets buried by "Hey MOTHERFUCKERS, my BADASS CHOP is on the road, so DROOL, bitches!" threads that invariably center around some dude from the midwest's early eighties CM400?
Yeah, a little.
Don't know what the solution is.
These guys make a site where we can meet-up, but how do you 'screen' without being really weird about it?
IF "locals" REGULATE, it can get a little out of hand..and turn into a shark tank...and reining 'em in makes the admins "ModerHaters"...and that's a drag for them. To do work and then get slapped with ingratitude is a bit lame.
So, I don't know what the course to take is...
I guess if enough folks feel strongly enough, they can start a private board...but, I hope they have the constitution and time to admin it. We did that with a skate forum, and it's not easy.
This is an issue that confronts internet forums universally.
When does being "All things to all people" become "Too lame to live"?

It IS your place, I, for one, am right behind you.
I got a bit grouchy with a non bike-owner a couple of weeks ago for always having an opinion on everyone else's shit. (It wasn't Cunty Punk, but similar thing). At the time I couldn't be bothered to follow it up. He's since BOUGHT a twenty thousand dollar Evo "bobber", so now I think I must bow to his superior judgement.
Ho-hum.

why can't we all just get a long,? my question is, a long what?, maybe a long stick!, a long rifle?, long forks, I much prefer long legged women, and a long ride! if every body liked the same kind of bike, we would all watch Orange County Posers, or maybe West Coast Phonies!

Exactly!!!!! What Trent said, his post should be a sticky at the top of every page on here, not put on the back . I thought this was a motor cycle site not a dating service.

I have a feeling that the powers to be aren't listening and if they are they don't give a shit anymore. If they were, I would like to think that they would try to calm the pack instead of letting it eat itself. I'll be surprised if something actually gets done.

Late.

So, why does everyone have such a fucking vagina around here these days?

If I had a vagina, I'd be at the Longaberger basket site, bitching about my husband spending a ton of money on scooter parts.

I don't.

I'm not.

I'm glad to have a dick.

Wecome to public forums. PC-ism is the lips of the cunt.

It's too easy for the nonbike owner to tell you how your bike should look.Trent, although your take on the board makes alot of sense, you have to understand that the whole motorcycling thing has changed. You have the new group of bikers (with a small b) that think that just buying a bike will make them cool.I think there's more to it.To become a Biker (with a capital B) takes more than a bike purchase. It is more of a lifestyle and the attitude of freedom that makes you who you are more than what everyone else thinks of you.Long live the individual with the will to try something that he or she likes, not what the masses say is cool. What a day to be speaking of freedom on.Happy 4th of July everyone.I think I'm going to take a Triumph out today to piss off all the new HD bikers.

Lots to digest.

Perhaps we should summarize:

1) Less logrolling

2) More self-confidence and original thought

3) Ownership needs to pen a blunt, concise mission statement, and post it prominently

4) Newbies (hell--EVERYONE) need to fill out their profile more completely, so that others can know where each member stands

and perhaps most importantly,

5) Everyone should wear a white helmet with a rainbow bandana on the 2009 EDR.

Thanks for clearing things up, gentlemen.

Well sir, you asked for input so here's a little from me. You are ignorant, crude and shallow minded moron.

Any man who cannot put together a sentence without resorting to profanity is incapable of reason and clearly short of class and education. Even if your points are correct, they are so poorly made that they don't deserve replies...except of course from kindred spirits.

Is your shop and bike as filthy as your mouth? Loser!!!

Please keep this fucking post on topic...

Fuck.. I just said "fuck" again.

Darn.

On a sidenote. I see the only posts you have made to this board are asking how to START your Triumph. Seriously? haha

Enough already.

There is a button on the posts that say "REPORT"

Many users on here use it, and often. Its what drives deleting posts. If you think the post is dumb and doesnt benefit the board, please let us know. I dont read every single post on here so I count on others to field the crap thats here.

I still feel there is a lot of good info here, but wading through the boring stuff like " can I build a bobber from a honda CBX??" has no place.

That said, please let us know what you DONT like by reporting it.
