I know i'll catch shit for this but, fuck it
How's about no more "what is it worth posts" !
1:It's only worth ( whatever amount ) if somebody wants it
2:It's only worth what your willing to pay
3 It's only worth what you can afford
Remember kids it's a fucking motorcycle!! Sure antique ones fetch a high price,
as they should.Once yer over 10 grand yer just wasting money you could be putting down on a house!!! Custom, this, chrome that it's all horseshit. These
"old school choppers and bobbers" were made by guys who did'nt have monster big bux,and for bazillions of dollars who wants to buy and ride someone elses motor anyway??
done bitchin :D

In addition to the no "what's it worth" post I would like Antibilly to be banned. I don't care for his attitude. I'll be back later with a detailed list of members that I don't like or make me feel unfomfortable.

I won't give you too much shit, however I appreciate you actually giving me shit for my bitching the other day. :D I even piss myself off sometimes...
Just curious, why "what is it worth" posts are bad? You saw my post on how much a WLA is worth, in fact your reply and info was pretty good and it helped me out, but where should one look for this info otherwise without looking for an expensive, in-depth restorer's book? Seriously only curious. Is there a good link to a place that has prices relative to partial completes... for example a frame and motor only like what I was asking about? That would be good info if someone does. I think they're okay and on-topic until someone posts some rediculous bike that nobody will likely know and is more than likely a down-payment for a house anyway, like you say.... Just my $.02. I think this is a good place to ask relative cost for parts. Especially if you really don't know if you just stumbled on to a "barn-find" vs. someones personal money-pit or over-inflated sale. To give another example, I've been into Triumphs for quite awhile and could give an accurate estimation of it's worth or what various parts of them are worth... however, when I step into the realm of other bikes like HD, other Brit bikes, Japanese bikes, etc. I don't have a clue. If I come across something cool, that seems like it might be a cool build, I wouldn't want to get taken on the price even if I did have money to throw around. Is there a place to go other than here for info like this?
No shit giving intended, lagitimate question. I'm done with the bitching stuff too. However, I've still not switched to decaf! :D

Well since you ask :D
When I'm not sure of a price,I looked at completed Ebay auctions ( this if what
is in question is something im going to sell ) What the market will bare etc.
We all know original parts are worth more. Another point is ( "i would'nt pay more than 2 bux for that") What something is worth is relative,I grew up in a
bike family and I have seen things go for stupid amounts of money and other stuff for next to nothing. My father would remind me of when I traded a WLA
speedo in exc condition, for something worth about 50 bux, mind you I wanted
what I traded for,yet everyone said thats a 400 speedo you dummy.Hence again
everything is relative I got what I wanted ,but in hindsite I could have gotten
400 bux.The demand for certain "rare" things in everyones dash to be "different"
lol,,makes something worth more than it is ie:supply and demand, once that falls from favor since now EVERYONE has it ans it's not quite as cool, you
can't get back what you paid for it. "What it's worth" is ONLY what it's worth to YOU for YOUR reasons! Now if your trying to make a buck thats a different story, also a google or ebay search will tell you what ANYTHING is presently worth.ON a board it's just wasting time and really just getting opinions.A good find does happen but in the real world not online, restoration is a world all it's own and BS as far as Im concerned as ther things look better than they did from the factory. Now taking care of a vintage motor and maintaining it and RIDING it is a whole different matter.Choppers/Bobbers now a days are just like the tattoo fad of the 90's,,,hell kids nowadays have more tats than 1/2
the bikers I grew up around, lol
So in short ( lil late for short eh ) If your gonna do this you gotta learn it ,make some mistakes and learn.Chances are you find a nice piece for cheap
at a meet DON"t TRUST it!! look it over carefully, learn your parts, learn there defects ( panhead anchors that come out ) You can't take someones word as gospel,,you need to know and learn for yourself and with that comes loosing
a few bux here and there.Motor books made a book called Restoring yer HD
get it read it.In the beginning we all always jump at something,we fuck up and we learn, thats how builders are born;)
hows that :D
bottom line is sometimes ya gotta loose to win
without mistakes we never learn a thing

Good and insigtful and I agree for the most part. When I bought my 60 pre-unit I spent about double what it was worth because it had problems where it wasn't visible and I could only take the guys word, so in a sense I did learn the hard way how much things were worth and often kick myself for the investment I could have since made better. Learned just the same. However, the board was the perfect place in my opinion to ask how much that WLA was worth because I only had a couple days to find out and you don't see them on Ebay too often in the condition that I was looking at. Couldn't find much on a google search either. BUT, with your help (because you've lived and learned) you were able to advise what you knew and I was able to make a decision. Yes, it was an opinion, just like everyone elses that participated, but it was more of an opionion than I could form based on the information that was available. I think all information (for the most part) when used with discresion can be valuable, even if it is just an opion. The idea is to help right? You actually helped me personally make a decision NOT to buy that along with the other people on the board because of the information/opinion that was shared. Anyway, for what it's worth, I think a "what it's worth" post can be helpful if used for the right reasons, and rather you like it or not... you helped me out. Thanks! :D
Still think they're a total waste?

OK,I can understand that a "sounding board of sorts" but perhaps a FAQ would be best.Like in " I wanna buy a panhead .what should I look out for? " Knowing about what your buying is a far better thing that "what it's worth" eh?

Agree and good point. I actually wish I had those pictures of that bike. Pics help the effort also. I'm going to post them eventually with that guy's JD (I think that's what it is)... I may still go back and make him an offer. He had tons of other stuff too. Maybe something is actually buyable at that guys house. Had a couple shovels, some other 45's, etc.OK,I can understand that a "sounding board of sorts" but perhaps a FAQ would be best.Like in " I wanna buy a panhead .what should I look out for? " Knowing about what your buying is a far better thing that "what it's worth" eh?

Everyone has made good points, and personally, I feel both sides are legitimate. I know that "What's it worth" posts are sometimes a pain in the ass, but sometimes, a guy really needs to get a little advice in a short time, and can't always afford to make mistakes to learn. Also, the same item can be worth more in different parts of the country than in others. Not everyone puts their parts on eBay to sell them, because things really get discounted on eBay. Look up a part on eBay, then go to a swapmeet and try to get that part for that price. Chances are it ain't gonna happen.
So enough preachin. I offer a simple solution that should please eveyone. How about a "What's it Worth" section where guys can ask those questions, and those that feel like answering can, and no one in the regular forum will be bothered? That way, eveyones happy. What do you think?

Damn peace keeping nations :p ,,that works Though I would tend to disagree
parts at swaps are far cheaper than ebay.Real people real money,at leats at REAL swap meets

there is nothing wrong wih whats it worth posts. they are entertaining, informative, and more often than not, they do effect a pricing. of course, it is what someone is wiling to pay that sets the worth, but educating that payer is what forums are for, IMHO. only someone fishing for an uneducated buyer could really be against WIW posting.it cant hurt anyone.and nobody says you have to participate !!.
what we need to do is watch the classified. i lost out on a chaingaurd that was a good price, and one that i had been looking for.for a while , because of unscrupolous protcol. i made a legitimate post to a seller, and while waiting for a reply from that seller, another buyer posted after me and brown nosed the part out of from under me. thats pure worm. turns my stomach. you cant really pull that scum move on ebay.
what i am saying is there is all kinds of WIW. sometimes its a parts asking price, and sometimes its how selfishly low you go to obtain it.
buy the way, off this topic, but someone did mention 45 parts. i got a wonderfully intact 3bolt frame i need to collect parts for. specificly a rear wheel to start. either a stocker or one modified to fit a stock frame.
thanks!!!
