View Full Version : im gonna say it, are we becoming the horse?

maybe its just because its late, ive had a long day and im very tired, but are we here at the journal become more like the horse magazine??

I know i have not been on here for very long, but i have been on the hamb for quite some time, and it did seem to be a bit different when i first subscribed here. it seems like more and more all i see people chopping whatever they can get there hands on, and idiots asking stupid questions that have been asked and answered a thousand times over. now, before everyone gets on my ass and offended and say that "everyone has to start some where..., and there's nothing wrong with cheap bikes jap bikes... first of all, i have nothing against any bike you want to ride, and certainly, if you feel the need to chop up a cheap bike for experience, by all means, go ahead, but you dont have to post everytime you want a opinion on how your "82 suzuki bobber" is coming along, and how your first pinstriped fender came out.

Wasn't this board started to bring people together to talk, get advice and help find parts for vintage cycles(notice how i do not use "SICKLES") foreign or domestic, not find out if they make bolt hard tails for 78 yamaha 125 dirt bikes. i might be exagerating just a bit, but thats what it all seems to be here anymore.

let me get this straight. I dont have anything against any bike you want to ride, i may not want to ride it, but if you like it, by all means, do. but this may not be the board for you. I just believe we need to get this board back to its roots.

its not just jap bikes either. what people are doing to triumphs, harleys, and so so so many other bikes is just criminal. i cant believe the strewn ideas these guys have of what a traditional or "ol skool" bike should be. it makes me want to pull my hair out.

Guys, if you have to put, "i know its a stupid question but..." in the beginngin of your post, then it is a stpid question and maybe you should ask it. maybe you should spend 5 min on this wonderful new invention sitting on our laps all over the world and try to find the answer to your stupid question. i bet you'll find a few other answers at the same time. not to mention you wont sound like a damn idiot. there is such a thing as a stupid question, and they keep getting asked.

Ryan, if this offends you, and I am out of line, please let me know and i will delete my subscription to this board immediately. but if you agree, maybe we can start doing something about it, i will help, just let me know what i can do.

sorry for my rant, ive been watching the evening news, and is even more disapointed then the things i have been talking about.

thanks for your read.

And, to to be the Horse we would have to print for the masses that you could ride your Harley to the top of Hearney Peak in the Black Hills, even though the 7242 foot peak is in a Wilderness Area, and that the tunnels on the Needles Highway were carved by water...........................naw, I didnt read that in the HORSE did I?

Yeah, I read that and the Horse and OSR are actually less acurarate than the National Enquieror when it comes to the truth...........naw, this site is far from them.

i for one think that this is a tremendous place to ask stupid questions. there is a wealth of knowledge on this site, and there are a lot of people who are interested in answering those stupid questions. i would think that judicious scrutiny of thread titles would probably keep your average chopper black-belt from having to wade through too much debate regarding which bolt-on hard tail is best for a suzuki bobber project. but i've had to ask a few dumb questions along the way, and i've learned a bit from others asking some very basic question, often times because a knowledgeable old-timer really fleshes out a concept i only had a vague working concept of. i'll tell you, i'm up here in canada, and it's not exactly the hub of the motorcycle world. i'm sure there are other greenhorns in areas for more remote than me who are thankful to have a place where they can semi-anonymously ask a total boner question. there are certainly things i read on here that i wish i hadn't bothered to, but, you know...it is a message board, it's gonna be a jumble. there's been some real neat stuff on here too. sometimes you got surly staff at your local chopper shop who look at you like as a blank cheque, it's nice to be able to have somewhere to turn for a more thorough, though certainly often times sarcastic answer.

What shit's me about the HOG/Rub crowd is their self perceived level of exclusivity. The minute we start restricting members by requiring ownership of a "brand X" bike or a certain level of mechanical knowlege then we're going to fall into the same category.

I'm happy to talk bikes with anybody. The forum layout gives me the opportunity to choose what discussions I get involved in. (If only real life was that convenient! ) If someone posts pics/questions about a bike that I'm not interested in then I just don't open the post. Simple! The mere fact that a person visits this forum indicates that they have some level of interest in old bikes. If someone starts acting like a dick the let Ryan and Co handle the matter.

Some people may start their questions with "I know this sounds like a stupid question.." because they feel a little embaressed or humbled asking what they believe is a stupid question. We should be encouraging, not criticising, the asking of questions because surely that's one of the main functions of a board like this.

Biggest thing is newbies turn up, trawl through other forums and then bring that crap over here. How many time do we need to see a radial engined bike or that fibreglass half chick bike? And as for stupid questions, no end of candidates for that one of late, "if I put on this sparkly seat on my bike, will it be a chopper or a bobber?" Or my favourite, "I know that some asked this exact same question last week, and the week before and the week before that and I asked it last month but .............. ?" Use the search function people, that's what it is there for.

I'm no newbie to motorcycles or riding them or the people who are riding them or simple "hanging around" in whatever capacity. During the months I've been reading this forum, I have noticed a shift in the patronage. When I did notice this, I also soon noticed that most of the 'dumb-question-posters' and 'chop-whatcha-got' dudes don't stick around long, or maybe I just don't notice them for long. I might even fade away myself if my first build doesn't benefit from this forum. I've been finding much more I can relate to here, the more I read and compare, than the flotsam that you speak of. Oh, they are there! I just don't pay them as much attention as the ones I identify with and find inspiration in. My $.02

P.S. I think I've read much more sketchy 'facts' at the HORSE, than here, too.

What's a HAMB?
It's a meat that comes from a pig, it's often eaten on holidays such as Thanksgiving and used, thinly sliced, in sandwiches.
It is also one of the subjects of Dr. Seuss's famous book, Green Eggs and Ham.

I'd say... YES... we were headed in that direction. As such, I'm changing gears...

The Jockey Journal is not the place for the "Bad Ass" biker that wants to show off how hardcore he is. Some of the folks that post here are just plain and simple rude and immature.... The first thing I am looking to do is weed them out and boot them. I'm well on my way.

so the goal is to make this place more like backtalk? i think the majority of people like this place because it isn't backtalk.

as far as communities goes Ryan, this place has really carved itself out a nice niche on it's own, be careful about fixing things that aren't broken. it sounds like you want to change the format from "punk rock" to "adult contemporary", which is your choice as it's your site. if that's what you want, fine, as long as you realize how much of your core user group you might be alienating.

I would say you can always limit it to your purists vision of what a true bobber is or your vintage collectibles but you will lose a lot of talent. First you will narrow it down to Harleys and pre 70s European bikes then it'll be down to Harleys and pre unit brit, then down to tin primary Harley only and there is already a couple of decent panhead forums.
Sure there is some insane shit done, sure there are some stupid questions but you brand loyalty guys are just as bad as the kids I hear in school with "I only buy at Hollister or Abercrombie"

Its about wrenchin, cutting and welding and being in the wind to me, if thats not the direction for this site then no big deal there are other places to hang on the net.

Sounds like a bunch of bitching like stupid fucks who want censorship for music and porn, wanting censorship for what they think is dumb or rediculous. Those who join this board do it to support a culture that we all love and like any culture there are ones that are slower to grasp things then others, but should you condemn them for wanting to know more? No you educate them as to the way things should be. Its like you want censorship for you guys that hate the stupid posts.....If you don't like it, stop your crying and bitching and don't read it or listen to it and move the fuck on with your life.

If you don't want to be bothered by someone's stupid question, don't read their stupid thread. I'm just as guilty of taking a jab here and there as anyone, but if taking a minute to answer someone's question is not something you want to do, you also don't need to turn it into a 10 page bitchfest. Not that I'm against 10 page bitchfests, but I'm not complaining about stupid questions. The thing I don't like about using the search feature is that if you should find the subject you're looking for, but want additional information, some "kool kid" will probably bitch that you're resurrecting old threads. So what's a fella to do? I hate to think that after as many solid, friendly people I have met on here, some other group is going to tell me to go fuck off to some other site because they don't dig the kind of bike I have. As far as I'm concerned, telling someone that Jap bikes aren't cool enough to chop is the same shit as a guy on a Bigdog saying a Trump isn't a real bike. Or some jerkoff on a Fatboy talking shit about your XS650. I don't know, you're probably just going to check my profile and see that I only have jap bikes, and decide that my opinion dosn't matter, so why am I talking?

I'm a hamber as well, I know what you mean by stupid questions people ask but isn't that the purpose of a forum. I will admit I'm seriously considering a jap chop, but it's only because I dont want to spend a ton and I'd rather fuck up a cheap jap bike than an expensive brit bike. That being said it's the same thign we deal with on the HAMB there will always be "rat rodder" and there will be hot rodders there is a difference. I guess it all has to be taken with a grain of salt. one day it will be you asking the stupid question or asking opinions. I mean that to everyone before you judge something as stupid or gay remember that at least someone is taking the time to try. I'm just as guilty as the next one. I worked at the pileup wondering why half of what got in did..but im sure people thought that of my car.

If you don't want to read a stupid question, don't open the thread. The people on here that are more worried about the post count that actually helping somebody need to piss off. I had a million questions about things I didn't know when I joined this site, and I got burned and I got some help at the same time. The search feature is nice and all, but sometimes you just want to know more.

And as for choppin Jap and Brit bikes. That is some RAW talent. There are some badass bikes floatin around this website that are incredible. Like somebody said, you have to start somewhere.

I don't think we should knock the Horse either. That magazine got me started. NO, my old man didn't build bikes in the garage and I didn't grow up around it. I just picked up an issue a while back and thought, "that's cool as shit, I wanna do that." That eventually led me to this website to meet you guys.
