I know there is already a thread about " post your bike picture here " but It is too damn long so here is my own thread with my bike in it :) 93" stroked 1956 panhead with S&S shovel topend , bla bla bla , also very scary and dangerous to ride around on . Soon to come , different paint & handle bar set up .

Man...I really like your bike. Every change you've made on it has been for the better.

I think you've got the mid-60's look nailed.

Shit I wish . . . I actually got this bike for a trade . I had a nice but not finished 1950 merc that was chopped , airbagged , 302 SBF , C-4 auto . . . all that stuff . Traded it to this guy up in Reno for the bike . It was actually featured in the Horse magazine a few years ago , I forget which issue . It originaly had big wide beach bars and these cool little homeade struts on the back fender , insted of the taller sissy bar . It had a nice 2" under glide frontend on it too . I traded the glide to my buddy R.F. for the springer which is on it now .

Anyhow the tank was done by the original guys who built the bike . I guess he found it on Ebay and it was dented . he cut out the dented area to fix it and then decided to recess it in like that . I've made a bunch of small changes here & there but soon I'm going to paint it nice metallic green with some silly patern and change the bars around a little ( Rob , I might need those z bars back . . . ) I am also going to sweep the exhaust up in the rear as I found a pretty nice set of old cocktail shaker mufflers on ebay for $35 :) they just need a little chrome .

Thanks Bass , coming from someone who knows what they are talking about thats a great compliment :) Wait till I get the paint & chrome sorted out . . .

Here is a picture of it from the other side .

Cocktail shaker upsweeps will rule...and I like the other stuff you've got planned.

It's good to know that at least one person out there thinks I know what I'm talking about. :)

I guess I don't know what I'm talking about, because I always liked that bike with the shorter springer and the wide bars...although it still is a kick-ass bike.

You know what Mike, that was a killer Merc, I always liked that car. It was a good swap.

The best thing you did was to 86 those beach bars, but if you paint that bike green......YOU'RE GONNA DIE!

Dave and I better come over an' take all that stuff out of your garage while you're still alive, OK?

I'm sure it's going to look sick with upswept cocktail shakers, Z-bars and flake paint, but to be honest, I love it just the way it sits. The pipes, bars, and paint all complement each other to give it a killer '60's look. That bike rules.

Su-weet. If I come out, can I ride it and get a free tattoo?

When are you gonna go back to "dash"? "Equals" just doesn't sound right.

=mike=

Rich , I've told you before . . . you are welcome to come & try it anytime :) Are you coming out for No Love ? Since my friend Justin has his bike back and up & running , he is my " orange county conection " and I'm sure we will be up there & most likely Dustin's party on the 4th as well . I remember you talking a little about a tattoo or something ? C'mon I dare ya !

As for the merc , I agree it was a pretty good trade . I miss it a little sometimes , but after a few close calls and highspeed drifts on the chopper it all goes away ! Plus I have so much room now in the garage . . . I was able to go out and buy a whole new rollout and fill it with tools ! Lucky me .

Spent , I agree that it does look good the way it is , and alot of the look it has now was stuff I did to it . . . but there is still alot more left alone that is just the way I got it and would like to change as well as stuff I have to change . . . the front pipe drags like crazy now on right hand turns faster than 5 mph so I need to re-do it with a squish pipe . I figure while I'm at it I might as well redo the whole system . The shotguns are nice looking though and I agree that they look good with the mid-apes and springer .
I dont know if I am going for the glamour metalflake deal , I'm going to paint it myself & I'm not that good with that shit . We will see I guess . The pipes & bars are just things I have wanted to do with it for a while and I have riden it around like this for a good while now . . . time to change it up and finaly make it really mine , you know ?

Fatass , you can ride on the handlebars , on the freeway to the tattoo shop , to get your free tattoo :)

Mike, I'll definately be out for No Love, and I'm trying to work out something for the 4th of July. I realy should be at Dustin's for that.

I hear what you're saying. Sometimes you just aren't satisfied until it looks the way you see it in your head, which generally means changing every damn thing. Keep us posted on the progress. I'd like to see how it looks with the paint, pipes and bars changed around. Whatever you do, make sure to paint the recessed areas on the tank a contrasting color. That looks too good to just blend in.

G.

Didn't have a shorter springer (unless I missed something). The "beach" bars were on the Glide, which is now on my bike (no beach bars).

Anyway, Mike, those Z bars won't fit that top clamp and dogbones...you'll need to run conventional risers out the springer tubes and get a different clamp. Problem is, I'm not sure I want to give them back!!!

=mike=
06-06-2005, 12:10 PM
uh oh . . . time for some covert actions . They are pretty comfortable huh . I am going to be ditching the dogbones and using a more narrow set of risers , they will be perfect for those bars :) My buddies from Japan just left and they said they can hook me up with bars & risers & other kooky jap bike shit ( i.e. hardcore chopper mag stuff ) so we will see I guess . plus i am trying to find someone to bend sone 1" tube into the same shape as a set of old stingray bars I have laying around . I have a few things planned , we will see how it goes .

R.F.

See if you can snag some Flanders "Glide" risers (half dogbones) from them! I'll give you the bars back for sure then!

=mike=
06-06-2005, 01:02 PM
I see these on ebay everyonce in a while . . . they are newish looking but still pretty cool . I just dont know if I want to dap the hole or weld a bolt in there or any of thet shit . I would like to not alter that springer too much .

http://www.debrixcycles.com/images/harley/x1/aw2k/LotImg114.jpg

In Hardcore Chopper , they have these little risers that have an expansion slip deal , like a gooseneck on a bicycle . . . you tighten a bolt inside the base of the riser , and the bottom post that slips into the top of the springer back leg , expands on an angle and holds it in there . I think I might go with that opption too , but they are only like 2 inches tall . . .

R.F.

My stretched springer had slugs with threaded studs plug-welded in for risers.

I saw those chrome risers...wonder what's under the chrome? Probably not brass.

=mike=
06-06-2005, 01:13 PM
It said they were billet A . at least they are shiney . . . maybe we could have them brass plated for that old school samurai spirit :D

That's not a bad idea...could actually "shape" the ends better before plating, too. I'll have to keep an eye on ebay more...

Could skip the risers altogether. If you're hellbent on Z's, they could probably build you some w/ intergral risers. Maybe too modern for what you're going for though.

I thought about some riser / bar one piece combos , but I like how the bars look seperate from the risers . I'm sure at some point I will get a wild hair and make something like that , but for now I have it pretty well figured out what I want to do . Plus a buddy of mine made those z-bars that Rob has and I am kind of stoked he gave them to me so I want to run them .

Rob , I was thinking about a little dremmel tool action on the front plates of those since they are alluminum , They would sculpt pretty easy I bet .

If'n you do ever want to run some T one-piecers...I have a set of gennies from the '70s. They're like 20" tall! Kutty thinks they're old Hernandez bars. They'll slide right into the springer tubes, too!

=mike=

okay I need a pitcture , I am enticed . . .

okay I need a pitcture , I am enticed . . .

Look at the pic Tony Boner posted...they look like those, but twice as tall! The Foundation ones are made for hydraulic front ends (and they're $100 for chrome!). Mine will fit right in the springer (and they're not $100!).

=mike=
06-06-2005, 02:57 PM
what kind of shape are they in , pullbacks ? straight rise ? chrome ? no chrome ? give them to justin ( along with my break parts ) and he will bring them down to me this weekend . . . then you can have the z-bars for a little longer :)

R.F.
06-06-2005, 03:13 PM
Dude, they're not new, but runable. Chrome is aged (fuck, they're 30+ years old!), but they're cool. Straight T's. I'd turn down the lowers just a tad so they slide right in, then drill the side of the springer tube and pin 'em like Job's bars on his Pan.

This is interesting guys.... I'm finding, and looking for all kinds of ideas to do something different with my bars... I'm not totally satisfied with how they look now.. The top plate with the "ears" (like you have there =mike=) is actually a little too wide I think. I got a second one which is not chromed. I might weld some bent tubes on there to get a lower kind of bar... More of a racer style look..

I've also been thinking of making some clamps on a milling machine to fit the chromed (good) plate, and weld some z-shaped bars to the clamps...

How does the pinned mount (to the tubes of the springer) work.. The one you're talking about Rob..?

See... a bit too wide in my opinion..

No way--leave it alone, it looks great as is.

Although I will admit that I, like many of us, I am sure, have gone to great lengths to change one stupid little thing that I probably wouldn't even really care about in six months, spending time and money that would be better spent elsewhere.

That's a pretty bitchen setup man . . . it looks like you could take a pipe cutter to those dragbars and get a few more inches off each side . I would cut them till all the controls are right up against the grips & risers , then see how it looks ?

Rob , you wanna swing by justin' s work later this week with my stuff or should I have him get ahold of you :)

Mow-Reece...you run the type of top clamp w/o the ears for the dogbones. I think Job went through the springer above the clamp, drilling through the tubes and the risers. Find a pic of Job's pan and you'll see what I mean.

Mike...I'll be in Irvine on Thurs. Maybe I could do it then.

That's what I wanted to do, but then the front brake lever will hit my throttle housing... It would be possible on the left side, not on the right...
Will have to make internal throttle first... :)

Rob... I'll try to find a pic..

Thanks...

Internal throttle or can you put the controls on the othersied ot the risers . . . ? Then your throttle would be right up against the riser . clutch and front break on the INSIDE of the risers . . .
