go to a recycling center and buy a thick aluminum plate. Weld small steel parts on top of this. The aluminum takes to long to preheat so there is no danger of it welding.

I bet that smarted.
I did summat like this after a fall speedboarding at about 50mph - tore straight through the gloves I was wearing (and both knees).
