I read this in an old Easy Rider Tech book, and used it last month when I changed my rear on the dresser
To align a the rear wheel with the front to insure the track is dead on
1) get 2 - 8 ft long flourescent light bulbs
2) stand the bike up (usually involves another to hold, although I used a chain hoist and straps in my shop.
3) set the light bulbs on 2x4's to raise them up the tire
4) adjust rear axle until all sides of front and rear tire touch, or measure as even if running a narrower front tire.
5) lock down rear axle
6) enjoy - you will feel the difference
Let me know if this sounds whacked but it worked for me.
