You asked for it....
6 wide and very short ,I'm building this for practice and nothing more. First time I've used this technique.

If I want to make one for my Triumph, do I need a Whitworth log?
Very nice...what gauge & alloy of SS is that?
machobuck
06-19-2007, 07:17 PM
At this point its very hard to work the peice. The roll prevents your mallet from contact. So what I did was pulled the roll so it would be a tad more "open"... I was now able to work the peice from any angle...
Ps) Dr. Benway, Not sure what a "whiteworth log" is. I have used palmtree stumps so anything works...The ss is 22g and I think it was marked 304?

More of the same...I have found that with SS annealing is key. I put 10 hours into a nice 20g fender only to find a crack along the edge.Scraped it!~ (Not talking about the current peice)

He's messing with you. Because Brit bikes have Whitworth threads and bolt sizes.
The demo looks good and I'm glad you did it. I think there might have been a couple of people on here that thought you faked the fender before. Keep at it and you are gonna be awesome with the metal. When I get going on my "so called street rod" project I may have to talk to you about doing some work for me.

Not to sound like "snobish" or anything but , I picked it up on my own. The internet has helped with the overall "idea" but thats about it. I don't come from a gearhead/hotrod family ((I have a car, but dont know how to ride a motorcycle)) but my dad is very cool with my hobbies. He set aside a section of the garage for me to work and doesnt mind me pulling overnighters in it. He just has a thing about gas welders!

Sure was, that and a very old peice of railroad track are my edging tools.I had a proper bodyworking hammer with a fiberglass handel but it busted after a few hits. I guess wood is always the way to go.
Too many projects,
Welder is all on me,I am saving up for one. Also looking into some hand shrinkers and stretchers to make a 50hour fender not so...

congrats. great tech post. im glad you posted up a finished fender. damm nice work.
Nice work Mate, Stainless is such a bitch to work. I'm with out a shrinker at the moment and have been forming only by streching and mild hammer shrinking which works but takes time. I'm interested in how other metal formers do their shrinks and you said you to are with out a shrinker. I have been doing this kind of work for 12 months or so and have been fortunate enough to open my own shop doing work for customers and other kustom shops as it seems this is a skill in short supply so keep working at it. Oh and if you ever feel like you want to come out to the Gold Coast Australia, I'd be happy to put you to work cash in hand (no visa). I can't tell you how hard it's been to find help who know their shit. Later Twig.

Nice work young man.
One thing you will find out about fabrication....... getting ahold of the proper tools is only half the challenge - getting a place to put them is a little more work. A guy with talent and the desire to work long hours can build anything - but the proper tools are important. You might try and look for a part time job in the industry - just make use of the shop/tools on your own time part of the deal.
If you brought 1 of those guards and a business card to the swap meet you'd be in business.
