View Full Version : Ok Sportster guys, stand up...

Ok so I've been going to rallies all my life. It started in the early 70's for me and the difference between a rally today and a rally in the days of yore are profound. And one of the biggest differences that bugs me the most is the way the Sportster gets treated at runs/rallies now.
They get tagged as a "bitch-bike" or a "little" bike, and in terms of status, well let's just say I have to look up a lot of noses before I can look a fellow rider in the eyes....
The way I have always seen it is quite different. The Sportster is the Hot Rod of the brand. It is smaller, lighter, and tighter - it always reminds me of a little Duece roadster, cut-down and purpose built for racing. It is the best performer out of the box and it is built to handle and perform quite well thank you very much. In fact back when my dad was young he told me that the Sporty was the bike to have. It was the bike of choice for most younger guys and the larger bikes were left for the old men. When his friends and he were out chopping & stretching a bike it was usually a Sporty. And the whole time I was growing up my father always had a hopped Sportster around. Maybe that's why I love them.
When the time came for me to get a bike of my own there was no question - it had to be a Sporty. I could have bought a Super Glide or a Softtail. Cost was never the issue. I actually WANTED a Sportster!!
So why should I feel like I am getting sand kicked in my face at a rally? The answer is - I shouldn't. When we get rolliing on the road and the big bike riders get throttle happy or start fooling around, I can take solice in the knowledge that my "little" bike will stomp a big fucking mud-hole in their ass at the drop of a hat.......
So they might have a more flashy or a prettier bike than I do, so what. I put all my dough into the "GO".....Chrome can't bring it home as they say.
So there it is. Anyone else feel the way I do? Post up some pics of your "little" bike and tell me how you feel. This is our place, and we should stand up and be counted, together.....that plus I want to know how many other guys dig Sporties. :)

You hit the nail right on the head, Bro!
I was kind of shocked to discover the same ugly snobbery as you're describing when I merely MENTIONED wanting a Sporty recently. Seems that they're not GOOD enough for the Modern Yuppie Biker Fags, but when you talk to TRUE bikers...ones that have been around longer than AMERICAN CHOPPER has been on the air, you'll find that they are far more receptive!
Still, there IS an almost unspoken disdain for Sportys, and I don't get it, either...
When I was little, I was fortunate enough to be able to spend time with a local motorcycle club, and Sportsters were the favored scoot among these riders. We're talking the mid to late 70s here, and these guys rode souped Sportys with trick paint and custom bars. Their reasoning was the same as yours and mine...the Sportster models were cheap, widely available, light, and easy to coax performance out of. They truly were/are the HOT ROD bike of the Harley persuasion!
Last Summer, I met a guy at a party with a hopped up Sporty, and we got to talking about them. I told him how I dug those bikes, but had owned the big Kawasakis as muscle bikes myself. Talk naturally came to performance, and when I asked him how a warmed-over Sport RAN, I was kinda shocked when he said "Take it for a spin and find out!".
That quick ride reaffirmed what I had learned from the guys back in the 70s! Sportsters flat KICK ASS! True, my old KZ-1000 would probably have run away from this Sporty at the top end of the track...but the way that lumpity Sport jumped off the line was unbelievable! Around town, that rumbling monster of a Sportster really put a grin on my face...I have to own one someday!
Screw the masses and their trendy, stuffy assed opinions...twist the grip and they'll be too far behind to fuck with you anyway!!!

Everyone I've been around dig the sporties I have/had.
There are lots of comments about how small it is but that usually leads into how managable or fast it is.
When we roll up to the bike nights 'round town there's usually a handfull of "real" bikers that look at mine and ask if my girl let me take her bike for a ride. The majority of riders though tell me all about how they wish they would have kept there sport and blah blah blah.

I dig the early Sporties. They are just about the only thing HD that a guy on a budget can afford, and they make for a cool chop/bob. Let the RUB's hate 'em, it keeps the prices down for the rest of us.:D

I look at it this way, I didn't buy a bike for someone else, fuck them if they don't like my Sporty. As has been stated before, the Sportster WAS the bike to have back in the day. Now, because of the mega dollar comfy softail choppers being bought by old men who never even participated back in the day because they were driving the muscle cars their fathers bought them, there is an unsupported snobbery from idiots who are more into flash than dash. So fuck 'em, I'm glad they don't like Sporty's, more swapmeet shit for me. Bitches. Ha!

My first Harley was a '73 Sporty. It was quick and fun to ride. It was easy to change things around. I may have gotten caught up in the 1/2 a Harley deal, but My style of riding which is hauling ass for long distances was the reason I went to a Big twin. No regrets.
I think that a sportster done right is the best lookin bike out there and always has been., especially the Tank. I will find some old pics but someone will have to post them for me.
Back to the subject. The sportster is a great bike and if you are a true enthusiast you wont give a flyin f88k what anyone thinks anyway.
now where the heck are those pics?!

I ride my Sportster on long trips, that seat is really comfortable, I was surprised given how everyone said it's a good thing it has a small tank 'cuz I'd never be able to ride it for long. Don't think so, rides well.

I have had the same response. Two instances that come to mind now are:
1. When out riding with a friend, stoped at a dive bar. We were leaving and this guy is looking at my buddy's trump bobber then laughes at my sporty. (5" over front end, z bars, 6" risers, Ect.) SO I start it up and try to blow his eardrums off. All I see is him with his hands over his ears. :)
2. I'm in a bar wearing a HD shirt and this haggered woman comes up to me and asks if i have a bike. I do a sportster. She turned away like i had the plague. That was actually a relief.

whew...now I can quit holding my breath. I was worried I might be a loner on this subject.
I am still scrambling for pics - I thought they were in the desk, right on top....guess they were put away somewhere......
Not that my bike is much for the eyes, it's basically a stock looking 1999 Sportster 1200 Sport (the one that came with dual plug heads and on-the-fly adjustable suspension). I have even kept the factory pipes for that stealthy sting. It has been lowered and I bought a lower, leaner mirror and a laid-back licence-plate bracket that flows with the rear fender. Most of the mods are engine based.
My buddy who rides a big bike thought his mildy modified big twin was pretty damn fast, that is until we met at an intersection and he tried to get away from me - only to watch me wizz by with the front wheel about 6 inches off the ground and the rear tire giving off just a haze of smoke. He was truley surprized....later on at the bar he asked me what I had done to my bike claiming he'd never been beat up like that by another (big) Harley.
Truth be told my bike isn't even the fastest Sporty around, it's just a moderately modified bike.
It's been bored .010 with higher compression pistons
Screamin' Eagle air cleaner kit
Screamin' Eagle carb kit (w/carbon fiber slider)
Higher intensity dual coils and plug wires
Higher rev limit ign. module
Un-corked factory exhaust with torque tubes
Super-sticky Dunlop soft compound tires
....that's all I can think of off the top of my head...anyway, nothing crazy, but it can be a surprizingly powerful bike.
I flat-out drag-raced my brother on a Suzuki 600 Sport bike and I handed him his ass....not just once - we raced over and over and over just so I knew it wasn't a hoax. Pretty even match-up actually, it just depended on the launch and hitting the right shift points. I know for certain that the longer the race the less my chances for winning was though....yea, I learned that pretty quickly. The Suzuki could just rev forever on the top side and my bike would be out of breath.
Lot's of fun anyway, because I had figured he'd pound my ass every time until we actually lined 'em up. The torque curve is as flat as a table-top on a Harley and I suppose that is what saved my ass. As far as HP goes they aren't WAY too different, but the Sportbikes have a the revs and the light weight.
If I had all the money in the world I'd own a couple of Sport bikes too, but I gotta pick my poisons....
...so back to the Sporty pics - c'mon, Beuller,,,,, Beuller,,, BEULLER!!!
I'll accept any cool links too. The cafe links posted elsewhere on the board have me pretty stoked - and wasting way too much time.

I'd like to get some Z bars, do some engine mods, and lose the nice, but stock, paint job. I'm thinking shiny black with either gold or red metalflake flames with white pinstriping. Spoke rear wheel and some sort of solo seat. I haven't decided if I'll do a bolt on rigid or not.

I have always thought that sportsters made great looking choppers. I don't know why someone would think otherwise. And they are plenty cheap to boot.
Just take a look at those bikes that Bill Mize built. Enough said.

Man, nice looking stuff on this thread...
I'm a Sportster guy, much to the chagrin of my dad. He told me I would be unsatisfied with it being a smaller and more high winding bike as opposed to the Big Twins. Man, you shoulda heard him when I told him it was pre-'74 with the goofy foot shift! So far, I've only worked on it so I can't whine too much, and the other one I had, I rode a few times and went back to cars and skateboards (how can you bea rebellious kid on a Harley if your dad owns a Harley shop?!) A lot of the choppers/bobbers I've seen that I like have been Sportys, but I like the big ones, too. Fricken' Fly-Rites are excellent.
I'm just in it for the enjoyment, I don't care what anyone thinks. Remember, I've owned three four-door cars without shame, so I can take the heat!

When i was looking for my first harley to build, I chose the sporty for all the reasons mentioned. The other reason that i chose the sporty was the fact that you didn't get any respect or love from other riders and being a big guy really throws them off when you tell them. Until recently with the pro stock harleys and the always fun top fuel monsters all the racing was done on sportys. I look for flat track racing parts at the swap meet and have always loved watching them fly around the track wide open. I'm looking to start my next bike and it to will be a sporty, based around the five spoke invaders from my first bike. My brother-in-law is going the Buell route and bought a wrecked one for a good deal, stripped it down and e-bayed the rest. I think it's worth looking into because there is some really good speed parts available and you can keep the cost down. Just not sure i like the looks of the newer motor. Maybe that's a good topic for another thread. Sean.

Actually, I'll be in Borger in two weeks, just was in my profile and said WTF, I'll change it now. I'm sure it will be fine.
My wife wanted me to sell my scoot, I even made some half-hearted attempts, to her chagrin I still have it. My daughter burst into tears when I put a for sale sign on it at a local parking lot here. (Yes, you can still do that in some parts of America and not worry.)
When i had my sporty i use to get the same treatment.
I work at a service station, and a lot of guy's come in on scoot's. I got to know a lot of them personally, we'd B/S about car's and bike's...
When i finally got mine on the road and took it to work i'd get the same guy's bustin my balls about owning a "chick bike"..
Funny thing was i didn't care, i really liked it, and when i was looking for a bike i wanted a sportster.
They alway's reminded me of the early bike's from the 50's, and thats what i was after, not the bragging right's of saying i had a Haritage, or whatever..
I was proud of mine and never gave much thought to what anyone else said.
Too bad it's gone now...

I am sure that many people have gotten into bike because of the affordability and availability of the sportster. There are a ton of them, they aren't out of the realm of the average income, and they are a Harley. Most of the haters are the RUBs (rich urban bikers). I dont think they even care about looks but about price tag and ego. IMHO the sportster is very important in american biker history. The old school guys know whats up. In the end the only thing that matters is that its yours and you like looking it at it everyday. Same can be said about the old lady.

Buddy of mine wants to trade his sporty plus cash for my Duc. I can't decide if I want a sportster anymore. Hatch is building my XS. If not for that I might feel differently. I never wanted a Harley to have a Harley. We built the bike together in 99/2000. So it does have some sentimental value. Red and white '57 style tank, red frame, 21" spoke front, aluminum spoke stock wheel in back, Buell pistons and heads... it's NICE. But the XS/Triumph stuff is more my speed. I'm not sure what to do.

Keep the Duc and wait til the XS is finished to have your chop, I saw the picture of that Duc that is a sweet ride that a sportster will never match, I know I have both. Sportsters are nice but that Ducati is awesome.

I love the Duc but I think it's time to move on. Looks like were going to do the trade. Best part is when I come out to SoCal to visit him, I can ride the Duc through the canyons (he'll take his Buell race bike). I know he'll take care of it too.
Here's the sporty. I don't expect it be be a Duc, so I think I will be ok. If not, I can always get something else. 10 years of sport bike riding coming to an end! I'm not sure if that's good or bad...
That tach is long gone, so don't everybody freak out about that...

I don't think Sportsters are really that looked down upon by true enthusiast, their mark on Racing and the general riding public is evident. A well tuned and maintain Ironhead is all I need, and it was all that was needed for countless other riders. For me it's as simply as power to weight ratio.

great thread!! when i was in school in the late sixties, i had a 64 xlch & a '49 pan that i had bought when i was too young to get a driver's license. the xlch was the one that got admired then--when i rode the pan, people called it an old guy's bike!! the ch would run circles around it. now i'm building a '68 xlch & am really looking forward to riding it a lot!!!http://community.webshots.com/photo/364052220/364057716HTkqtx

hey Broman, re: your rant on the second-class citizenship of Sportster riders... Sonny Barger rode a Sportster. I don't see anyone lining up to tell old Ralph that he's a pu$$y for ridding a bi#ch bike.
I'm building a new bike around a sportster motor I found on eBay, but I'm havin' a hellava time finding the frame of my dreams. Know anyone who builds softail style frames for Sportys? I've found Atlas in Apple Valley, CA, but they wan't nearly 3 grand... too rich for my taste.
any help would be greatly appreciated.

Lots of nice sportys on this thread. I love my little XL. Its an 01. And I've raced more then a few big twins and even sport bikes from light to light for the fun of it. One of my co workers rides a softtail that he had to have slammed and modified so he can fit on it. He's about 5' 2" and used to give me shit about my "half a harley" and what not. But like the rest that are true enthusiasts , I never gave a fuck about all that, heck I like all motorcycles. One of my friends that owns an 883 went over to a shop in town called Performance Choppers. One of the mechanics asked him what he rode and he sheepishly replied, "Just a Sportster". The old mechanic looked at him with a frown and asked him, "What the fuck is wrong with a sporty?!" Eventually I'll have this stocker built the way I want, rigid frame, new paint with racing stripes, bored out to 1200 + cc's, etc, etc.. I ride every day to work and plan to keep the sporty until I can't ride anymore.

I like sportsters a lot, but I also like swing arm bikes as well, so I can be called a pussy real easy. They can also call me a pussy because instead of fighting with my fists I will just pistol whip them and call it a day.
it is nice to see I am among friends here and dont have to get into arguments about Ironheads.
But keep it down guys, we have all seen what happened to flathead ford engine prices, they were free junk 10 years ago

YOUR SO RIGHT ON ,MAN.
Man those are some sweet sporties. I bought mine ('o4 883C) thinking I would move up to a big twin. Fuck that, I started riding my sportster and everytime I ride it I like it more and more. I couldn't imagine rideing a barkalounger on two wheels around.

What kind of dicks call Sportys chick bikes? The ones that don't know anything about bikes.Women ride everything guys do.My chick friends ride baggers, fat boys, and road kings on cross country trips.I shrunk my '76 Sporty by adding a hardtail, shortening the forks, pipes and bars and cut down and dished the tank. It's tiny but man, whatta bark!Blows the big bikes away light to light.

If I were going to pick up an HD, it would be a Sporty. No contest. I like the lines, the mid-controls, and compact stance. In fact, I keep urging my lady to get one...so I can steal it out of the garage every chance I get. :D
I cannot justify paying more than $10K for a motorcycle...any motorcycle. That's just outrageous. Let the RUBs hate on the Sporty. Don't need these "lifestyle boutique" bikers start upping the prices.
After all, those are the guys pointing their fingers and calling it "chick bike." I had one of those lifestyle guys pull alongside me on his electra glide. I look over and wave...nothing. We get up to the light together. He wouldn't even look over and nod. What a douchebag.

i don't know why folks put down sportys. i've got an 80 cubic inch shovelhead fxwg and an 88 cubic inch twin cam flhstc and i doubt that there's very many sportsters i could keep up with on either of them. acceleration or top end.

Had a couple Sporty's, nothing wrong with them in my oppinion, used them as a bicycle so to speek, groceries getters and lots of wheelie-fun...
But to use 'em as a base for a ground-up custom project..hmmm...
I would rather go for a bigtwin mill since all the aftermarket prices from frames, front ends, oil tanks, wheels, chrome-polishing costs, etc..are the same for a bigtwin and a sporty..
Resale value is more than "slightly less" for a full custom Sportster though...
Just my idea...

[quote=Adam]I have had the same response.
That was actually a relief.

inches dont count in a bar...wanna race for your pink slip..your bike will look good when I sell it on ebay...ah the plethora of dead on retorts to the over confident rolling sofa owner with the new ss carb and extra chrome. ANy one who has been asorbing some modicum of oil and gas via the skin canvass over the years knows wht a sportster in the right hands can be. New jacks are so easy to spot. Ive seen plenty of large bikes.. beautiful..stripped down to bare essentials....hhmm looks like they trying to get more like a sporty than they know......yeah man...proper compression up around 9:1 perhaps a wide ratio first a b it taller in fourth.and attention to any lag..you KNOW that sporty will just rip..rip and frickin roar...

I have a home made exhaust, a K&N big sucker, an after market coil, and a re-jeted stock carb (that's it) - and I got about 70hp to the rear wheel, and 98mph in the quarter (and that was my first time ever running at the track). Fuck it, I like my little bike.

I JUST sold my most recent sporty chop to a fellow JJ'er ....
I keep coming back to the sportster, because it IS the hot rod of the HD name and for cost VS hp and performance you get WAY more with a sportster.
I love using the Ironhead as a chop/bobber motor, they're fast and cheap to build and allow a guy like me with no dough to make something pretty cool and smoke a few big twins in the process....hahah

SPORTYS RULE!!!
A few years ago I bought my 99 / 883, as usual all unnecessary BS
had to go...some lowering springs in the back, and off I went...
Still looks pretty much the same after 4 years, except for the dents and scratches, the ducktape, the stickers, and the occasional broken off part.
Need to give it a bit of TLC very soon.
Just love to get on it and just take off without a care...been doing some oldskool car stuff too for the last 10 years, but the braking down part along the way kinda loses it's kool after a while.
Anyhow, like the 883 so much I decided to build a wild looking sixties type chopper...
So I bought a low and fat homebuild ironhead in a hardtailframe and have it sit in my garage for about a year...constantly making plans and changing them again.
All of a sudden my buddy Guy got sick of the plans and told me he wanted to build it for me.
That's what we've been doing, if we aren't waiting for parts I have to buy.
Coming up really nice ...if you aske me...
Only one thing you gotta remember...just don't try to make em look like fatboys or any other shit...THE'RE NOT BUILD FOR THAT!!!

[quote=halwade]hey Broman, re: your rant on the second-class citizenship of Sportster riders... Sonny Barger rode a Sportster. I don't see anyone lining up to tell old Ralph that he's a pu$$y for ridding a bi#ch bike.
Ive only ever seen pictures of him on big twins, in his book he says he built his wife an XL that matched his 74, but never mentions riding one himself.

Are you guys making the frames?
I made the frame on Nifty's and I got another sporty in the workshop that I've made the frame for, but the one on mine is a shitty off the shelf thing that I've modified. Gonna do a new frame for it when I get the time.
There's more pics at www.chopsnbobbers.com (http://www.chopsnbobbers.com) if ya interested.

I'D DO IT BUT HEY THATS ME-I SOLD MY HD LAST YEAR AND BOUGHT AN S4 MONSTER-WENT LIKE HELL HAD A LOW SPEED DROP AND TOTALED THE BIKE (RADIATOR ALONE WAS $1148.00...) IT WAS FUN BUT NOT MY STYLE-AND NOW DUCS HAVE A POOR REASLE VALUE-AT LEAST IF YA HAD TO SELL THE HD YOU COULD GET REAL MONEY FOR IT (CAN YA PUT A PRICE ON SENTIMENTAL VALUE......).WELL GOOD LUCK JUST MY MEASLEY TWO CENTS WORTH-CHEIF-GOTTA FINISH MY SHOVEL NOW!!!!

Okay, Im 60yrs and just bought my first bike a 2006 883L with foward controls. I use this bike to ride not sit in the garage. We go off to work each day.,run errands, take long rides 100plus miles.
I feel comfortable with my feet firmly on the ground 30" inseam.
Has plenty of power for me. But I took one of those jabs the other day when someone from our group said I only had a 1/4 of a Harley.
Well I paid full price for mine, and it suits mejust fine. And when I feel ready and have the cash will probaly up to a 1200. I know just how you feel. Everytime I go to the dealers, seems I have the smallest bike on lot. And oh. I dont think this Red Pearl bike needs a lot of chrome.

If I didn't ride a Triumph Bonnie, I'd ride a Sportster. (and I still might get one someday...) They're a cool, fast bike, and anybody that gives a fellow biker serious shit for riding a Sporty doesn't know a damn thing anyway, and isn't worth anybody's time. (Those types of people only believe in OCC and engine size.) Sportsters rock.
To add, a Sportster is just as dangerous as a Fatboy, I always say.

it's absolute truth that Harley HAD to build the Sporty, back in the 50's, because Triumph and BSA were kicking the shit out of the
BT's and taking market share away from The Motor Company. Light,
fast, and with good handling, the Brits made Harley respond- and
The Sportster might've saved the company.
That "Girl Bike" stuff is soooooo Chickenshit. Anybody who sez
that is an asshole. Anything with 2 wheels is fine w/me. It'll never
end, though. There are always gonna be guys who have to
flick shit at someone else to try to build up their own self image.
I need to scan some of my old pics of it so i can post a few..
I've even gone a looked at a few in the past year because i was considering getting another...

I agree with you. The way I see it, is that a guy that call's a sportster a "girls bike" and is serious... I really can't take seriously. Being a girl myself, when I compare my previous baby (1000 ironhead) to my husbands 100 c.i. softail here's what I see.
The ironhead weighs about half, well close anyway. 4 speed, rough ass little scooter that is so tight and agile, If my bra wasn't properly adjusted so that I was totally symetrical, that bike was switchin' lanes, so I pretty much had to pay attention all the time. lol. Most of the speed came from getting the RPM's up real high, and the bike was a friggin blast. But after a short trip to Daytona (about 2 1/2 hours, my eyeballs were vibrating).
My husbands softail, 110 c.i., 5 speed, 200 rear tire is like a sofa to me. I say that in a good way. It pretty much drives itself. I instantly loved having the torque power at lower rpms. Alot of women, and a few men are intimidated by the size and the bars. And being the wuss I am, I was scared too at first. After the very first ride I was hooked though. Once you get past the size issue, the weight works to your benefit when you are barrelling down the highway. And as far as the bars go, I actually prefer them to drag bars, more comfortable, although it doesnt look it, and I like that I have to use more effort somewhat with them, if that makes sense.
I guess what I mean by all that, is that I personally, as a girl, feel a bigger bike is "easier" to handle than my sporty was. but then again a stock sporty sits much higher and has a shorter wheel base, so that makes a difference.
My new scooter being a chopped sporty, I am gonna love!!!! however, I have no doubt that my husband and I will probably switch fairly often (he prefered my sporty over his own bike most the time.) Here's shots of both.

i thought that bike looked familiar. one of the captions in his albums says stock stretch/stock rake, but doesn't say where the frame is from or whether is is a weld on hardtail. i looked at the paughco catalog, and it looks just like one with a chopper neck.
anyone know the average ground clearance on the flyrite frames? looks pretty tight to me, and i live where there are alot of curvy areas. gots to have my ground clearance. at least 3.5-4 inches.

Yeah you're right! Looked like 4.00-18" front & rear til I measured them... In that case leave the rims natural & go with 3.25/3.50 front tire.

No stock w/ no shock . . . I wanted 2 under but jason at paughco advised on the stock, stock, stock . . . he is very knowledgeble and knew the look i was going for . . . I could put it on a 4x4 block of wood and barely spin the back tire so that will tell you height and it set level

awesome possum. appreciate the help with the dumb questions.
4x4 won't fit under my current bike without a little persuasion right now, so that should work out perfect height wise.

i sell harleys for a living (river city harley-davidson in fort wayne indiana). i ride my strutted 883 to work every day (year round) and could give a shiz what the big tire, chromed out yuppies with huge bike payments have to say about what i ride. when i have a sporty hater i usually reply with "sportster, kickin' big twin ass since 1957".

I know this is an old original post, so Broman, hope you got yer Sporty. I've owned 4, and if I ever buy another Harley, it'll be a Sporty. Anyone that calls them chick bike is probably embarrassed about the size of their manhood, IMHO.
Brent - why don't you KEEP the XS650 and add a Sporty? XS is sweet too, I've been pining for one!

My '77. 1250 cc, Lester mags, all original late '70's build, paint is original too. It's, fast, loud, and obnoxious. Not ony that, but it is not fat, overweight, poor handling, slow, etc.
Smaller in size is often better. I have a Kaw 800 Drifter, the Indian look-alike. It is the same, does everything better than the 1500. The bigger bike may have an advantage over 100 mph. But really, how often do any of us cruise at the ton?
What did the old Indian guys that wanted to go fast ride? 101 Scouts and Sport Scouts.
It's kinda like this, would you rather look like a sumo wrestler or a track star?

Personally I grew up hating HD just because I honestly never met a decent rider.
They hate jap bikes, act like dicks, wear and ride the most obnoxious stuff and generally give motorcycles a bad name, as bad if not more than stunters. Not a "good bad name" either, which is what they are shooting for I guess. Maybe its fallout from the huge exmilitary/1% times because now its "cool" to pretend like you're a bad biker? Trust me you aren't a badass unless you are engaged in a shootout with the police over the 12 pounds of coke in your saddlebags as you blast across the mex/amer border riding a dirtbike.
I always secretly loved shovelheads and when I found a vintage bike club around here, the HAMB and then jockey journal I was blown away, I never had much exposure to bike culture. Now I know there are normal sane fun loving HD riders out there :) I get dice and plan out building a sweet bike. I never would have done any of this had I not found the real deal.
Maybe its just a younger generational thing, I'm 24. The other part of it is that HD is just a manufacturer. There only exists a HD "culture" if you buy into it. Older crowd has that experience of original bikes rolling out in 1910 (my great gramps rode a harley in 1914) and have more of a connection, but when I grew up the only thing kids could afford was 70s and 80s honda/yamaha barn bikes that are now surprisingly really popular.
Sportys, like any bike, are only cool if you ride it because you love it. If you ride it because its a HD, to me you've lost the point.
edit- I ride a rusted out hellbent 1970 R5 in a very loosely defined RD350 frame but I want to build a shovel for my next bike.

Hi there
first post here
with my Sportster in the remaking:
http://photos1.hi5.com/0006/004/306/ayjdhz004306-02.jpg
Well, I am building a Sporty on a rigid frame based on a Flyrite Frame (Santee Copy). It is coming out sweet. When I told my father he said, "don't let anyone tell you a Sportster is not a Harley!" My father rode with some of the brothers out of Griffth Park in Los Angeles in 1968. He said guys back then made fun of his sportster. So I guess it is nothing new, people always think bigger is better, funny thing, I built Volkswagens in the 1/4 mile and beat many Camaros and Chevelles. We ran 9.80's at over 117 miles an hour at LA County Raceway. To go fast and look cool I will take the little underdog everytime.

I just bought a 2002 XLH Sportster, and I LOVE this bike!It handles great and cruises at 80 no sweat. My boss said, you know what harley riders call em?Bitch bikes, All I said was, only if your driving, and that aint gonna happen.hahahahah.
