my old 1913 H-D model 9E chain drive twin, single speed since H-D did not develope a 2 speed until 1914 when it used excelsior's 2 speed rear hub. also, no floorboards, you kept your feet on the peadles. this was the scariest bike i ever rode. it would do 60 if you had cast iron balls. i dont, but i rode around 35-40 mph and what a handfull! ridgid rear, 1" travel in front, tiller type bars, coaster brakes just like your old schwinn bicycle, that worked about as well!

my favorite bike, my 1938 UL 74" flathead. i built this about 12 years ago, it is not fully restored, but about 95% correct, needs step hubs, less chrome, correct bars, & air horn (carb cover) but other than that it is about all correct. a blast to ride, with or withour the sidecar attached.
knucklehead
05-29-2005, 01:38 PM
my 1946 EL 61" knucklehead (with 74" wheels & pan jugs) not very correct, but a good rideing machine. much more power than my flattie, but less than the pan.

my '53 fl panhead. never really liked pans except for resale, but this one was very correct so i kept it. seized a rod bearing so i tore it completely apart for a full restoration. have it about 1/2 way done now. i want to repaint it, but have not selected a color yet.

my '40 EL knucklehead, now 74". mostly genuine H-D parts, just chromed a bunch of it. nearly perfect '41 frame, nos 45 springer converted to fit 1" bearings, stock front drum, pm disc rear, open belt, 36-39 tanks, 41-46 speedo. been collecting parts for this one for about 14 years or so i think, i lost track.

Bass, your BSA is going to be one killer ride.Already heard about your plans for this one on the HAMB but didn't reply to the thread because so many people already told you how bitchin' that bike is going to be or already is.Of course they were right.Your idea for the fork is pretty cool and I like those shortforkers a lot ! I look forward to any progress on this one.The stance is right on and the bike is very low.Do you think you can build it this low ? I'm just thinking of turns and curves...

Nah not really, just little shit. Since i work nights, i can bring small stuff into work with me and tinker out on the loading dock. Got the points cover with me tonight to sand down and i sanded the rear fender last night.
Realized after fighting with that damn frontend, (what's up non sealed bearings and having to fight with little individual ball bearings) that the neck doesn't have fork stops on it. so i have to take it off again to make some. DAMN

How long have you been working on the bare metal chopper now..?
Maurice....Yes, having a TIG is a good thing. I bought an older used Miller (Airco) Dialarc HF 250 amp machine with a water cooler. I'm actually getting pretty good at it already I think...but I do need lots more practice. It's a lot harder than Jimmy White makes it look! :)
I started on the bare metal chop back in November, but I haven't worked on it much for the last 2 months because I've been pretty busy with other stuff. I'm going to finish wiring it this week though...and try to start it.
Thanks Frenz...post some more pics of that bike of yours when you get a chance.

I got hooked on Honda 450s for a while. Probably because the motor looks so nice. I rode em, raced em, and of course chopped them. This was one of them. Poor picture, I'll see if I can find some better ones. This is a 4 speed motor in an AEE/C&G rigid frame.

Also, if you look in the background, on the lift, you'll see a 103" Knuckle bobber just started for a guy. And, I have a "super secret" WCC built frame to start another bike for Carlos.

Yeah, I bent the sissy bar out of 5/8" cold rolled, then added the T/L and the plate mounts.
The hardtail was one made for an ironhead sporty, I just cut off the old lower mounts, then I extended the rails to mate with the Evo lower frame area.

I got tired of replacing headgaskets on the flathead 74. Even though they only cost 90 cents a piece at Hap Jones.
Eventually I saved a few hundred more and upgraded to this tangerine colored pan ($300)
After the connecting rod in the pan decided to explode the cases into a million pieces, I then put a knuckle in the old pan frame. Then finally I had a reliable ride.

When you first posted the pic of your bike, the pic had some website warning that the link was forbidden. I thought that was rather severe language so I made fun of it, the auslinken is just some jive I made up for "outside links".

Thanks,
The front end was extended 3 1/2". In those days you replaced the threaded top plug in the fork leg with one that was 3 1/2" long. Then you pushed the whole front end down that amount in the lower triple clamp. wierd stuff. A guy named Stan Dishong (Stan's cycle shop) specialized in making those "extensions", he was located in Vallejo, Ca.
The motor was a 1938 61 cu inch lower case, pan head barrels, with flathead flywheels. that would make it then stroked to 80". A retired guy who used to build racing engines built the motor. I can't recall his name, but he had a machine shop along side the Rogue River in Oregon.
I freaked when those mufflers showed up cause they were so big looking, but they sounded great, melloooow, like glass packs.

Skateboards? Mine was homebrewed about '62. A piece of 1x4 with steel wheels off of a pair of skates. I shaped it like a surfboard, sorta. I thought I was hot stuff when I skated down the top of the curbs in my little Midwest town.
Here's one of my rides. It's a '39 Indian Sport Scout. Mine since about 1973. I courted my wife on this bike, chased her 'til she caught me, as my Grandad used to say. In the background is a '41 Scout bobber project.

Its amazing...You guys have some really sweet rides!!!Im lookin to build something this winter..Im thinkin generator shovel but im not sure yet.Im runnin an evo right now and i like that it will last a long time but in my opinion it lacks "that look".I enjoy it and thats what matters most to me I think.

Here's my budget ride. I spent a few winters on it. It is a '77 Yamaha xs 650. Rigid, 18" rear tire, cammed up motor, and the funnest thing I've ever ridden. I'd like to see more people to chop up the abundant Japanese bikes. I dig Harleys, but they are almost cliche' as the bike to chop. To each his own, right?

Your scoot looks good. I have seen the cafe racer guys drill five, 1 inch holes in those conical hubs, makeing them look like Manx hubs. Speed holes are always cool in my book and they really set those hubs off. If you look in the inside of the hub, there are five reinforced webings that you can use as a template. Obviously, miss the reinforcements. Just a cool detail that came to mind when looking at your bike.

Bitchin' glorydays ! Here's another bike with that same frame...(might have had a little less stretch in downtubes...not sure..) Those thin tubes makes the engine look "big"...this is also one of my alltime favorite scoot's in it's style of course..
